Why not? Every little bit helps. It's basically a similar scenario to simply slowing down. The major airlines have all done it and are saving millions in fuel costs annually now. I've implemented the same policy on my commute and have gained 4-5mpg.
As a nation we need to reduce our dependency on oil, and our excesses are the first places to start trimming the fat.
