If your employer allowed you to work four 10-hour days per week, would you do it?

As a nurse, I already work 12 hour shifts, 3 days a week . . . in theory anyway. Nurses tend to work a lot of overtime due to the shortage.

I used to work 8 hour shifts, 5 days a week, and work every other weekend. It always worked out to a horrible schedule. 12 hours 3 days a week allow us to have a life.

I think employers allowing a 4 day work week are going to have fewer "mental health days," as well as saving employees gas.

I used to work 4 x 10hrs. Loved it and wish to return. I spend $7 on gas each round trip to work. I could save $364 a year with 4x10 and have a day of rest in an otherwise hectic weekend.

An even better idea than working four 10 hour days per week would be for employers to embrace the employee working from home.

This would save on gas, the environment, reduce traffic, and increase productivity. There are several ways for companies to monitor an employee's presence working from home so it would be a win-win situation. Incentitives could be given to companies that encourage this type of employee.

I'm also a Replacements employee who opted for the 4 - 10 hour days! This has allowed me to save a minimum of $18 a week in gas! I applaud Replacements for allowing this change in traditional thinking....it is an immediate benefit to employees' pocket books without costing the company anything. The morale boost is tremendous and having 3 days off in a row allows more time to decompress and rejuvinate! Kudos to Replacements for being the best place to work!!

Working from home is no saving - I'd have to run my AC all day to keep comfortable. Now I lower it in the morning when leaving home for work.

Suzanne - you run your AC year-round? Yikes, must be cold at your house in the winter!

The price of gas is so high now that the increased use of electricity to cool or heat your home would be easily offset from the fuel savings of telecommuting.

Right now my manager and his boss are contemplating allowing us to telecommute at least one day per week, which would save me at least $50/month. I'm all for it.

I have worked for a few different companies that offered 4x10 schedules and I LOVED it. I loved it so much that when I interviewed with the company I currently work for, when asked at the end of my interview if I had any question about the position or the company, my 1st question was if 4x10 schedules were available. Roundtrip I currently drive 56 miles....that would be a lot of gas saved. I also loved having that 3rd day off as a weekday that allowed me to do things like banking, doctors visits, etc without having to use a vacation day. It is a fabulous benefit to be able to offer employees without hurting the companies pocketbook. I used to work at Replacements and can say that Bob Page and his staff are always trying new things to improve the work/life quality balance of his employees.
Go, Bob !!!
