No, election day, should be just that election day. No early voting, vote on election day are forget it. Its amazing democrats will do anything to keep our troops overseas from from voting, yet will change everything, to make it easier for folks in the states to vote.

Yes I would vote on Sunday. What is so sacred about the first Tuesday in November? And I support early voting. It's no different from absentee voting.

Are the people who support the idea of early voting on Sunday, poll workers? I doubt that very seriously.
Would they be willing to become poll workers to facilitate this idea? I doubt that, too.
What hours do they suggest? Ten to six? Let me see, workers arrive 45 minutes to an hour before the polls open to do the preparations which can only be done that morning. If there are voters in line at 6:00, they must stay until all those have voted and then do the tabulations/procedures to close/secure the voting machines. That can take another hour or more.
I am an active and experienced election worker and adding Sunday voting makes me think of the straw that broke the camel's back. Or perhaps the elections office has more people than they know what to do with wanting to work the polls. Maybe those of us who work the weekdays and Saturdays of early voting would have stand in line to get to work on Sundays, too.
Extend the weekday hours into the evening. That's a reasonable idea. We'd already be there and we are patriotic and committed to making the right to vote available to as many as possible....within reason.
As usual I am using too many words to make my point. The first poster, Bill, said it best, "No."

I do not agree that we need Sunday Early Voting. There are 2 weeks including Saturdays to do your voting.
If you really want to vote, I think you can find a suitable time that is already available.

I work a regular 40 hr. wk. and when early election time is here I work a Saturday shift. I have already said I would help if the need was there at the voting places during the week close to where I work. Sunday is a time of REST. And it needs to stay that way. Everyone needs to have 2 days away from work. The people of High Point have 2 weeks plus Saturdays to vote. Plus they can vote by mail if necessary. The public needs to take more responsibility in using their time during these 2 weeks of early voting to MAKE THE TIME TO VOTE. The county can use that money in more ways than paying the people overtime for working on a Sunday when it's not necessary. We have more places to vote at early elections and that's more people working. Would more of the citizens of High Point be willing to help by work during early elections? This would be a great help for the workers and the citizens of High Point.

Having worked early voting, I , personally, needed a day of rest prior to the long days of set-up and election. Extending hours during EV would get my vote !

Absolutely "No" to the question of whether I would want to vote on Sunday. Let's stop now and reconsider this suggestion. People always find time to do what they want to do; they even go so far as to cancel appointments including a doctor visit when they want to do something special. Let us preserve this day as it should be used and that does not including voting. Most employers will give their employees a few minutes to go vote or come in late if they want to vote during the week The people that want to vote will find a time to do it. We now have the polls closing later and we have a wonderful "Early Voting" addition that allows voters to even vote on Saturday. These times are sufficient for voting!

I have had the honor and the privilege, to have served Guilford County's Election Board, since
1988.
I have since seen the workings of the polls from
being a precinct worker. Arriving early in the
morning on elelction day to get set up (not mentioning, the day before, as well).
I have served as a chief judge in two special elections. It was not worth the cost of the taxpayers, and those who dedicated themselves in protecting the premise of a free and democratic process, for those elections.
I have a full-time job Monday-Friday. My employer allows me to take time off to work the early voting. Now, these non-profit political
people are trying to induce their ignorant thought of opening the polls on a Sunday!
How sacrilegious!
Then get your asses up at 4:00 a.m., on a Sunday, and work until 8:00 p.m. When I am not working my full time job. I'd like to enjoy my day off! Especially, if it falls on a Sunday!
And about extending the hours during early voting, or even on election day. That is even an idiotic thought! Hello, only the state legislature and a superior court judge can make that decision.
I haven't even yet decided if I was going to work this upcoming Special Election, next
Tuesday! Go figure! And you want us to work an election day, on a Sunday?
To the Guilford County Board of Elections:
DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!
Thank you.

NO! I agree with George Gilbert. Many studies have shown that when people, not just poll workers, do not have time to rest, mistakes in their work increase tremendously. Working the primary this year as an Early Voting Official was quite exhausting as it was. Poll worker mistakes could lead to another election which would cost the taxpayers. The current early voting hours are set-up to accomodate all working shifts of the voters. And, from my experience, most employers allow time off if needed to vote. In closing, Guilford county already has a high enough tax base. We don't want to have another increase due to Sunday voting.

Are you kidding me? Voting on Sunday? Absolutely not! Folks make hair appointments, or whatever appointment during the week and, if voting holds interest for them, then make room for an appointment to vote during the week.
I am a poll worker for Early Voting and on election days and I would have to decline if I were asked to work on Sundays. It is a day of worship for me. God is first and foremost on my agenda and I believe others feel the same way!

I agreed with Judyth's comments. No, We don't need to vote on Sunday's. That is God's day. We already have enough days for those that want to go out and vote. If they really want to vote they will find a way to get to the polls on days we are open for EV and also on election Day.

I'll vote on Sunday - just as long as I don't have to go to church.
Posted on June 19, 2008 3:00 PM
No Sunday EV. Extend the EV hours Monday through Saturday; open earlier or close later. Poll workers need a day to rest and do personal tasks.

Mr. Holden:
Should you want to participate in providing that how we handle the early voting, and/or any election in Guilford County. Then, DO IT!!!
But, not at the expense of the taxpayers. If your
belief that we should extend the early voting hours, then I suggest that you contact your legislative delegation, or help your superior court judges, candidacy during this election.
Because it won't happen. Especially not this year. Why? Because there is a presidential election. You, of all people should understand why the ballots cannot contain, no more than they should. And, then, you have the audacity of extend the hours of early voting? Have you ever worked these? (Please, I have been doing this since 1988, and I believe in the process of democracy.) But not at the expense of those who commit themselves every year, for every election. Yes, every year, this, Guilford County, has an election. And, yes, we are appointed to two year terms as election officials.
Until the state legislature and/or a superior court senior residence judge, gives the order. Then, the extended hours will be adhered to.

I can't believe somebody would even bring that up! Sundays are for the Lord and it's already hard for me, dued to working retail! I would love very much to be at church listening to the word! People make the time to vote during EV or election day!!!!!!
Posted on June 19, 2008 7:16 PM
I think the idea of voting on Sunday is simply rediculous. If people can't find the time to vote during the week, then they just don't need to vote. They find time to do everything else they want to do. Besides that, I work early voting and Sunday should be a day for rest and worship. We work long hours 6 days a week and we certainly don't need to work Sundays!
Posted on June 19, 2008 8:36 PM
As an experienced early voting worker I would be available and willing to work a Sunday if it meant that more citizens would participate in the democratic process. However, I suspect that North Carolina values would supercede civic ones inasmuch as Sundays are generally reserved for our religious activities and generally followed in the fall by an afternoon of football. Fifteen days of early voting in addition to the general election day itself should afford ample opportunity for everyone to vote.

As an experienced judge for the last three presidential elections (and an assistant for the presidential election before that) and the last two early voting elections and primaries, I would be opposed to working on Sundays. Working these elections is grueling because of standing on your feet and very little time for a break or lunch when the turnout is heavy. When the turnout is light, it is a long tedious boring day that still leaves you exhausted. Most of us are getting older with health problems that we endure because the work is in our blood and we are grateful to live in a country where we have the opportunity to elect our officials. The voters must have at least some of that gratefulness and make the effort to get to the polls to vote. I believe we now have very generous hours to accommodate most all people who truly want to vote. We certainly don't need to expend any more tax dollars. The next step will be going door-to-door to get everyone's vote.
Posted on June 20, 2008 12:30 AM
No! We do not need Sunday voting. Folk who do not bother to vote during the 2.+ weeks of early/no excuse voting certainly are not going to interrupt their football games on Sunday to come vote. Of course they might come early on Sunday, but quite a few sleep in on their day off.
Election officials need the Sunday to prepare for the Tuesday Election. You know, you can ride a good horse to death.
Maybe some of the people asking for Sunday voting need to come work during a presidential election.

NO ! If a person wants to vote, they will make time to do it. If they cant make the time, they really don't want to vote. They have two weeks of Early Voting and Election Day and can't make time. ABSOLUTELY NO SUNDAY VOTING !!

No, I would not vote on Sunday and concur with many of the earlier postings. As a citizen, I oppose adding an additional day at the expense of tax payers and especially on Sunday. There are plenty of opportunities for citizens to vote, if they desire to participate in the process during early voting or on election day. Poll workers need a day to rest.
Posted on June 22, 2008 9:57 PM
I do not believe that Sunday voting will change the numbers of people who really want to vote. People go to the Dr., dentist, and keep other appointments so why can't they find time during early voting or on election day to vote?
