The train sounds like a good idea, and there may be times when it makes sense. At 30dollars per round trip, it is about the same cost as the fuel to make the drive.
The more possibilities on the schedule, the better this looks. Next step is to make it easy to take public transportation once you get to the cities.

Being that I ride Amtrak North to South & East to West, I would definetly ride this mid-day service. It gives the riders a better choice of time for traveling. Especially if you're traveling out of Raleigh/Durham International Airport. You don't have to catch a train at 9:30 a.m. when your flight departs at 6:00 p.m. I enjoy traveling by train. Especially traveling from New York to Oakland, Ca. It's beautiful, relaxing and so much fun. I wish we had ACELA in our area. Now, that's a whole new chapter!

OK, a question for these riders - there's no real transit in any city. Once you take the train to a city, what do you do from there? Just call a cab? And if you're going a ways, this train isn't exactly the fastest way to get there either...
While I do appreciate increased train service, I'm curious who the target audience is.

I commute to Burlington every weekday for work. If we had commuter trains and then the public transportation to get us to our offices, I would DEFINITELY take the train.

Is there were a train that went FROM Greensboro TO Raleigh early enough in the morning, I would consider taking a job in Raleigh and commuting by train. I was suprised and disappointed to see that the route is the opposite. It starts in Raleigh early in the am and gets to Charlotte by 10 am. Don't most people commute in the opposite direction??? Maybe a Triad to Charlotte train, and a Triad to Triangle train would be better. I guess they don't have enough trains/tracks to do that?

I would love to ride the train to Morehead City from Greensboro but unfortunately, that is not an option. Freight trains go there, why not add a passenger car?

John Mc,
There is a decent amount (though I would not say plenty yet) of transit service in the Triangle and Charlotte, and it is getting better all the time.
Take the train to Charlotte, get off, cross the street, wait about 10 minutes, even on a SUNDAY, and you can catch a bus for about $1.50 or less to the Bobcats arena, Discovery Place, or to a place where it is easy to walk to the Panthers' Stadium.
In Durham, you can get off the train and catch one of numerous buses because the bus hub is across the street, and you can get a regional bus to Franklin St in Chapel Hill or RTP.
Check this out- easy connections to the Morehead Planetarium, for example:

To answer your questions succinctly, no and no.
Now when this or any other train picks up at my doorstep when I'm ready to go and delivers me to where I want to be ... I THERE BABY! Count me in!

Great news! my wife and I use the NC Amtrak trains whenever we go to Raleigh, and would love a third train on the route because the train from Raleigh back home is a little earlier than we would prefer.
Any more news about Asheville service?
