American flag or apartment rules

Which is right? Should he be allowed to fly the flag against clearly stated apartment rules?

UPDATE: Before you comment, please note this story in which the apartment complex has changed its mind and will allow the flag.

He should be allowed to fly the American flag anywhere and everywhere he wants.

Sounds like the "Temporary Manager" needs to be taken away--not the flag!

Put the flag back up and take Ms. Cerroni away.

Yes, he should be able to display his flag! Ms. Cerroni needs to get a grip! This is part of what is wrong with our country right now. We have these young adults who have no idea what that flag really means; or how much blood was spilled to protect it and our country. My father was a WWII vet, Purple Heart, Bronze Star recipient. He and others put their lives on the line just so Ms. Cerroni would be free to say what she pleases. The rights she enjoys were won at the cost of lives!! This man fought for his country - Lady, grow up! Some rules need to be changed, overlooked, or completely done away with.

I served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps and 4 Tours of duty in Iraq. I still am very thankful that brave men like Mr. Way served in WWII. I am a business man now and understand that rules are rules. If I purchase a house and the HOA says my fence can only be 4 foot tall I can't have one thats 6 foot tall because I'm a vet, and I even own the property. If you make an exception for one individual you will have to do it for all. Thats just my opinion.

What's unfortunate is that, according to Equal Housing laws, if the manager allows one tenant to hang something on his door, no matter what it is, she has to allow every tenant to do the same. If she selectively enforces the rules that tenants agree to when they sign their lease, she and the apartment owner could be sued for discrimination.

Renting can be a dehumanizing experience, as this incident demonstrates. I rented for 20 years and had to abide by some pretty nutty rules, but I agreed to them when I signed the lease. The truth is so did this man, regardless of whether the previous manager was enforcing them. However, it would nice if apartment communities had a rule that allows tenants to hang one item, perhaps within size restrictions, on their door. Maybe it's a fire code issue that prohibits it, or just past tenants who took advantage of certain rules, but it would be nice to allow renters this one bit of freedom that would make their rented apartment feel a little more like their home.

Throwing a flag on the ground is an insult to every American. The person who did that should be fired, and sent back where he came from. When rules forbid flying the flag, those rules need to be changed. Courts have ruled, wrongly albeit, that we can burn the flag under the first Amendment. Doesn't that same Amendment guarantee the freedom of speech to fly it? If not, something is dreadfully wrong.

Some people may think that uniformity is good, and they have a right to think it. I feel just the opposite, and I have the same right. I can see where decorations like wreaths, snowmen, Santas, Big Wheels, old sofas, bird feeders, weather gauges, croosses swasticas, dog houses, or nooses outside the buildings would be inappropriate, but the flag should be exempted. Maybe Ms. Gerroni, and her bosses should be taught what the flag stands for.

I agree with Bettye. We have to wake up, stand up and show our pride for America. Throwing "Old Glory" on the ground is very disrespectful. Perhaps if they had knocked on his door and handed him the items this would been a different story.

This "temporary" manager should be just that-then fired! This man fought for that flag and should have the right to fly it wherever he wishes. I can understand some items not being displayed on one's own door, but a US Flag should be by EVERY US citizen!!
