Now maybe the anti-alcohol Christians will move off to Ashe County (or wherever it is that's still "dry" in this state) and allow Randolph County to become a little more laid back. :)

Joel P said:

We're fighting a war in Afghanistan against religious extremists who impose their narrow views on others. Thankfully it's not as messy here and a simple vote has toppled Asheboro's own, Christian, freedom-hating taliban.
Welcome to the 20th century, Asheboro. Keep this up and you'll be joining us in the present one before you know it!

Mad Dog said:

Sorry, namtac.

Ashe County has a brand new package store on the main drag in West Jefferson. According to the 11:00pm news on Tuesday, there are only 4 dry counties left in NC and they are west and southwest. So the Baptists will have to go almost to Tennessee and Georgia for alcohol relief.

Well lets see how the sale of alcohol affects crime in the next 2 years. Crime is prevalent everywhere without the use of alcohol. I understand the ecomonic standpoint that many folks are trying to capitolize on. I guess Bubba and Earl no longer have to drive to the liquor house in the next town. They can now just set up their own. LOL... Lets all welcome Asheboro to the year 2008.

Sensei said:

Cheers to the citizens of Asheboro! Time to move out of the stone-age and up to present times.

I also couldn't agree more with what Joel P posted - it seems that those so-called "Christians" had a Taliban-like stronghold on the city's policies, and this is the first step to dethroning their reign of terror.

Beer-Man said:

More like welcome Asheboro to 1933 (end of prohibition). It's about time the right-wing nut-jobs stopped imposing their so-called values on others.

Relax and have a brewski.

JenCinC said:

Definition of Christian: of, pertaining to, believing in, or belonging to the religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Jesus did not and does not reign in terror. Quite, the opposite, my friend Sensei, He is the ruler of peace. And no matter what the outcome of this vote, God is still on the throne. Peace to you and to the city of Asheboro.

Brian said:

When Asheboro gets all the bars and
nightclubs up and running lets see how fast someone gets shot.
If you read the news you no how many
shootings happen at these nightclubs and
bars and Asheboro will not be any different.
Hope Asheboro plans on adding extra police
because they will need it.

Sensei said:

JenCinC - thank you for clarifying my point and, at the same time, illustrating that attempting to control or affect a town's policy is inherently an un-Christian trait.

I'm not an expert on the Bible by any means, but I don't recall any passages where Jesus forcibly pushes his beliefs upon others thereby altering their lifestyle against their will. Jesus is the ruler of peace, not the public policy of municipalities.

If anything, one would think that the churches that were in opposition would see this as a windfall. Just think of all those tortured souls that the sale of alcohol is sure to create - so many more people to mentor and counsel!

Krag said:

I know of a couple in Randleman who refuse to shop at the Wal-Mart or grocery stores in that town because they sell alcoholic beverages. Instead they drove to Asheboro so they could shop in a "God fearing" community. I wonder where they'll go now.....Ramseur?

"Brian said:

Ummm...right, Brian. Because no one in Asheboro was drinking before the vote? Because only people who drink, shoot people? Poor logic, my friend. Try again.
Maybe you should argue for a gun ban if you're concerned about shootings taking place. To borrow the logic of the NRA, alcohol doesn't kill people, guns kill people.
This debate is hilarious. You would think Asheboro was some kind of beautiful utopia about to be ruined the way some people talk. It's an armpit, people. It can only get better.

I was surprised by the win and shocked by the margin. I've always been able to count on the native intolerance of the populace, but it looks like we're down to no more than 40 percent uptight, short-sighted,narrow-minded hypocritics here in A'boro...

Lisa said:

I don't understand something. In past years when alcohol was not voted in, it was because a majority of the people voting, voted no. What about that is someone pushing their views or beliefs on someone else? I don't think the Taliban ever allowed a vote. Now that the majority of people have voted yes for alcohol, does that mean their beliefs are being forced on those who were against it? No. Stop and think about it.

SOBER said:

For Gods sake, please lets not have any alcohol selling on sunday. AT LEAST, RESPECT US IN SOME WAY.

Krag said:

Sober:

I agree that ABC stores should be closed on Sundays and grocery stores should not sell it but It should be allowed in restaurants. Sunday is one of their busiest days.

SOBER said:

In a way, I do agree with you also.

Krag said:

If Asheboro residents are concerned about having a "healthy" city they ought to quit raising their children on soft drinks, sweet tea, candy and junk food. I have rarely seen so many overweight people, especially children, in my 8 years here in NC. Maybe they ought to close down the fast food joints on Hwy. 64 and ban the sale of soft drinks in the stores? LOL

Big Mama said:

Yeah, Krag.....let's get them all drunk instead!!!

Bob said:

What the Christian community doesn't realize is that it's an issue of freedom - not morality. It's not anti-christian to drink, as much as they would like you to think so. Alcoholism is a disease. It's not about right and wrong. Congrats Asheboro! Freedom Rules!

Lori said:

Yeah!!!!
It's about time we grew up with the rest of the world.
I was so tired of hearing the negative people saying if you drink you shouldn't go to church - God excepts everyone in his church. The ones saying all of this if you really checked in your church you would be surprised at what you might find etc... I know a few myself personally.
I had so many phone calls and Bible verses on my answering machine at least every other day for the past 2 weeks that I thought about disconnecting my phone service.
I know how to read and I know right from wrong my Parents taught me these values.

Scott L said:

This is absolutely a wonderful thing for our city here. I am a Christian but what is it with the Baptist community of Asheboro. I know some Baptist and they can be some of the biggest hippocrates in the world who "brown Bags" out of the store in Randleman. We have the Zoo, Lowe's Motor Speedway, lots of sporting events less than an hour away and the reason noone has stayed in our hotels is because of our status. Now, finally, we have spoken. Our town's economy will skyrocket. And, talk about crime? We already have that anyway. People get drunk all the time here. I do not think this will matter at all. Thank you Asheboro for finally being wet. No more big dry town east of the Mississippi.

Brian said:

Joel, you seem to think what I said is based on logic I"m stating facts of what happens at these places.
Winston Salem seems to think its a problem that there trying to pass a “Night Club Ordinance” the City proposes to make all night club owners hire off duty police officers as security guards at a rate of $25 an hour.
Based on your Taliban Christian comparison
you should judge your on poor logic.

OK, I know that ABC stores statewide for some reason are closed on Sundays, but why should that religious bigotry be foisted on stores, etc.? Aren't we supposed to have separation of church and state in this nation? What is sacred about Sunday? If you want to set Sunday off as something unique for yourself, fine, but why enforce that on everyone else? This is supposed to be a diverse nation, not a "Christian" nation.

Leslie said:

The vote is over!!!! Instead of bickering, placing blame, and calling names don't you think it is time for the citizens of Asheboro to band together? We need to ensure that we set a good example for our children. If someone is going to drink alcohol, they just need to do so responsibly. Just be safe, and keep our children the same way.....By the way, I am a Christian, but the main reason I voted against was due to abusive alcoholic stepparents. Unless you are raised in this situation, you have no idea how alcohol can ruin a childhood...........

Lori said:

Leslie I agree no one does know what it is like unless they are raised in it. I also was raised in a situation with alcohol. After retiring my father was a bartender for the VFW and that put the food on our table, braces on my teeth and all other things that were needed. There were good times and bad times due to his drinking. He was the best Father I could have asked for our needs were always met before his own.
There is good and bad in everything and lessons learned along the way.
Regardless if it had not passed it is still here all around us and always will be, there is no changing that situation.

Mike said:

Well well well, have you all lost your senses. As a Catholic who is God fearing and have grown up with alcohol in our home, I have tuned out just fine. I come from a large family and we are all good people. I would look more at how you raise your kids than if you can buy acohol in town. Time to take some ownership at home and stop looking for the boggy man. This will only be a good thing. So relax, sit down, take a breath and move on.

Joe Stephens said:

It's great to see the folks of Asheboro finally vote in Alcohol, legal sales that is, Asheboro was one of the largest bootleg communities not too say they will all go away but it will put many of them out of business which will mean less places to buy it underage. But the big thing will be better resturants, there is no good place to eat there other than a few mom and pop places and many of those aren't open on weekends. Crime will probally go up some, but to say there is no crime there now would be silly. It's insane that a legal product can be kept out because of the mind set of some backwards thinking people. Everyone is different and has different beliefs and tastes but the choice should be left to the individual not decided by someone else based on what they believe or how they choose to live their life. Christ did not push his beliefs onto anyone, God does not force religion on anyone but many so called christians want their beliefs and ways to be the law and pushed down to all. That way of thinking certainly does not draw people to God or to church, but love, compassion and respect for one another could do wonders. The bottom line is if you don't like alcohol you don't have to buy it let alone drink it, don't like abortion, then don't have one, don't like adult clubs, don't go into one.

Big Mama said:

These comments are so funny to read. Why, if you felt Asheboro was so backwards, and if you felt that the church community was telling you what you had to do, why in the world did you move here? This is so stupid. All of you are so glad Asheboro finally moved into the 20th century. If you were so unhappy, why in the world were you here??????????? If I were that unhappy with the place I live, I would do the most logical thing.....move. Why didn't all of you???

Sandra said:

Yeah big mama that's what I should've done because I dont have the right to stay in my home town, but somehow you have the right, huh? seriusly I hope now you leave town if don't like it, I can't stand the hypocrisy of the christians, who invite me to their houses saturday night for a drink and the next day go to church with a hangover, "supporting" our troops in Iraq, justifing killing iraqi kids for our "freedom", the freedom I didn't even have in my own hometown to decide what to drink, yeah!!! we're gonna regret this, just beacuse now we dare to think different from you hypocratic christians.

Big Mama said:

My....aren't we hostile!! Sounds like you have more issues than what to drink to worry about. I didn't ever say whether I cared if Asheboro sold alcohol or not....I just said unhappy people need to do whatever is necessary to make themselves happy. Sounds like you have LOTS of real issues other than alcohol. I never said if I was a Christian or not....I don't think it is relevant to the conversation. My personal beliefs are mine and I really don't care whether you share them or not.
All I said was the same thing I say about all the immigrants that come here with so many complaints. If you don't like it where you live, LEAVE!!!!!

Sandra said:

The arguement that one should leave if he is unhappy is utterly ridiculous. If leaves me wondering if the designer of this ridiculous concept ever took a history class. Are you not aware of the countless instances in which people of all ages, races, classes, and sexes have had to stand up and fight for their rights. Where would we be with out heroes such as Samuel Adams, Julia Howe, Nelson Mandella, and Big Bill Haywood? These people, and so many other neither stood for nor ran away when things weren't as they wanted, instead they STAYED and WORKED to raise awareness, and force change. A coward is one who runs when things are difficult or uncomfortable. We are not cowards, and we shall STAY to defend OUR LAND and OUR RIGHTS. You have a lot to learn about people and how to get along. I feel sorry for you Big Mama. I hope one day you learn to embrace
all people of the world and recognize that we
all belong wherever we are. God is Love
As an aside, I am not interested in your future comments B.M., as what you have to say is as interesting as watching corn grow.

Big Mama said:

Now your comments are really getting funny, Sandra. This is the type of comments I expected to get from you. Have you ever considered that your 'right's' end where they begin to infringe on the rights of others?
Don't waste your time feeling sorry for me. You don't know me. Thank goodness!! In one post you are trashing all Christians, and then in the next you are telling me God is love. You are pitiful.

Mike said:

O Big Mamma. So much pain. It will get better with time.

Mike said:

Sandra Sandra Sandra, stop watching CNN. The troops are a level of patriot that you could never understand. To think that we have people like you that make coments like that in our country makes me sick. You must be happy living in a country that troops go into harms way so you can show your ignorance. As a member of the USMC don't look for us when those Iraqi kids come over here to kill you. Now, lets all just get along.

All i know is, I am very happy. Now there is no reason for me to have to move, maybe this town will cease to bore me to tears....wait, we are going to have a brood of bible thumpers on the ABC board, nevermind, the town most likely will remain boring with only Sunday morning church service to look forward to. No wait, I forgot, I don't go to church anymore because of the way the good Christians in this town have acted and if that is being a Christian, count me out. With any luck, the good Christians who want to be on the ABC board will remember what they have been preaching for the past month and leave alcohol alone. Then maybe this whole alcohol thing will be the wonderful change that Asheboro needs.
