Replacements endorsements

For those who are interested, click here with a MS Word file of Guilford County endorsements by the Replacement Ltd. PAC. More about the endorsements can be found here.

The PAC is primarily interested in influencing "the election of local, state and national candidates who will best support and promote the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) citizens," according to its website. It is headed by principals at Replacements Ltd., a local company that sells china and silver and such.

Some highlights:

They endorse state Sen. Kay Hagan in her U.S. Senate run, but give Chapel Hill investment banker a nod, giving and indication that he's an okay candidate too.

All three Democrats running in the 6th Congressional District, currently held by Republican Howard Coble, get okay-to-vote-for nods, although Jay Ovittore comes away with the endorsement.

Richard Moore is the only candidate for governor to get an endorsement or any other comment from the PAC.

Katie Dorsett gets an endorsement in her bid for re-election.

If my memory serves me correct, the N&R was aghast that the Guilford County Republican Party tried to turn the Greensboro City Council races into partisan contests. The endorsement list from the Replacements PAC does just that. All of the non-partisan judicial races are identified by party affiliation. Where is the N&R outrage? It's only fair if you remain consistent.

You might ask Allen Johnson or Dough Clark, our editorial writers that question.

I'm on the news side of the operation and therefore don't really have an opinion. I will note, however, that both the Republican and Democratic parties pretty heavily push both sets of candidates. And sense this PAC endorsed both Democrats and Republicans (far fewer Republicans, though, for sure), I'm having a little trouble seeing where your outrage might be.

Fred,

I wasn't aware of the Replacements PAC endorsements until I saw it here. I wouldn't suggest an editorial about it because I don't think this gets the visibility or credibility that statements by the major political parties draw.

Personally, I do think it is deceitful to mark D or R next to the names of candidates in nonpartisan races because the voters won't see those designations on the ballot. I wasn't even aware of some of the party affiliations of some of the District Court judicial candidates or school board candidates. In the case of the judges, I think they would not be doing their jobs properly if their decisions were influenced by party affiliation.

Some of our best judges are R's, some are D's. I hope voters are wise enough not to choose on the basis of party affiliation.
