Souther talks more
District 4 Republican County commissioner candidate Eddie Souther called this morning to explain what he was talking about last Thursday when he brought up his concealed weapon permit.
"There are about 5,000 concealed carry permits in Guilford County," he said, and speaking to the county's gun range, "open the gun range up to the public."
Then he went on about a number of things, as candidates are wont to do.
On Shcools:
I asked (school board chairman) Alan Duncan to prepare a three-part plan for me on where he sees the schools now, where we're going to be next, and where we will be in five years. And these are important questions that we’ve got to solve. We need to look them when it’s not budget time. And (the board of commissioners) only looks in late May and early June. We need to know why schools need more money and where it can be spent.
On public safety, gangs and his district:
Part of my district is east Greensboro and part of my district has an area that is hit hard by gangs. Do we have a program that is strong enough in school systems to target and get (potential gang members) from being involved in gangs? Do we have another opportunity for them to explore themselves? The gang actually becomes a surrogate family because they don’t have proper role models. And Big Brothers, Big Sisters, mentors in our schools and teachers are positive role models. And there areas that would be lacking and we can say 'Hey, yeah things might be bad in your life, but if you get a good education, look at where you could be in the future. You got to break that cycle.'
