Cease and desist

Former state Sen. Hugh Webster, the Republican nominee for the 13th Congressional District House seat now held by Democrat Brad Miller, has received a notice from the N.C. State Board of Certified Public Accountants asking him to "cease and desist" using the term "certified public accountant" on a sign at his office on West Main Street in Yanceyville.

Webster says he has covered up the offending words on the sign and has formally consented to abide by the order, which prevents civil action by the board. He also calls the notice "political bull----."

Webster says the sign has been on the building for about 30 years, but that he ceased being a CPA several years ago.

The order was issued about a month ago.

It is so nice to know that the CPA Board of Examiners is aware of a "sign" on a building even though anyone connected to auditing any one of the financial instutions (think Wachovia, Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Washington Mutual, etc.) involved in the current financial crisis was not educated enough to recognize financial instruments that did not make sense. Effectively, these financial instruments are the equivalent of inventory on a balance sheet. Something that should be addressed (after Sarbanes-Oxley) by the Internal Auditing function and the external Auditing firm. Thank God the CPA Board of Examiners has the time and the money to protect the Public from "signs" that may be an oversight since they seem to not have the time nor the inclination to protect the Public from huge losses in their pension and profit sharing plans because they are not doing their jobs!
