Harsh words?

Civility and an exercise in good citizenship seemed in abundance at polling places throughout the city Tuesday - with one possible noisy exception.

Depending on who you talk to, District 3 city council candidates Zack Matheny and Joe Wilson may have exchanged angry words this morning in front of Page High School, which was being used as a precinct.

The issue: missing campaign signs.

"He accused me of something that didn't happen," Matheny said, denying that he had swiped any of Wilson's signs. "A rash of yard signs were taken last night - mine, his and others."

He said until this morning's clash their campaign had been fairly cordial.

"I think politics makes people someone other than themselves," Matheny said. "I just walked away and continued to run a clean campaign."

But Wilson remembers things a little differently. He denied accusing Matheny of taking signs.

"I'm not unaware of any harsh words spoken," he said.

Wilson said some of his campaign signs have gone missing, but he heard other candidates lost signs as well.
