Quiet before the lunch rush
It seemed a little quiet at Gate City Baptist Church in District 5.
The morning rush was over and precinct judges were anticipating people to use their lunch break to vote.
Don Buie, the chief judge for the precinct, said 123 voters had cast ballots by 11 a.m. and he was pleased with the turnout.
"This is very high for this type of election," he said.
Jack and Betty Cleveland weren't telling who they voted for. The couple, ages 76 and 72 respectively, don't even tell each other sometimes.
But Merri Romberg, 41, said she was voting for change and new blood in the races for mayor and council.
Trudy Wade earned her vote for council over incumbent Sandy Carmany. And developer Milton Kern got her vote for mayor.
"I just think we need a change," she said. "I like what he did for downtown revitalization."
Merri Romberg, center, stands with her daughter Katie, 10, as she signs in to vote with Gwyn Shearin, a voting assistant.
