How about not giving your kid a car? Believe it or not, teens can survive without their own vehicle. You can always pay more for insurance and have a very explicit say about where and when the car will be used. The use of a car is a privelege that needs to be earned.
If you have to get Junior something to ride around in, I agree with the article - get the most unsexy four-door american sedan you can find ... hopefully with air bags. It will be cheaper to insure and your neighborhood mechanic can probably work on it.
If you do get that car for your kid, you have a opportunity to teach some basic maintenance and mechanics concepts that go along with car ownership. They'll thank you later when some unscrupulous mechanic, 10-minute oil change, or tire shop tries to take advantage of them.
