Urban Loop construction

A preview of tomorrow's paper, which will include a map:

Driving in some parts of western Greensboro could become a bit complicated this fall as construction continues on the Urban Loop from Interstate 85 to Bryan Boulevard.

- Traffic in both directions of Interstate 40 will be shifted in late fall between Guilford College and Gallimore Dairy roads to allow for a bridge to be built over I-40 and dirt to be hauled, said Darrell Ferguson, the N.C. Department of Transportation's resident engineer for the Loop between I-40 and Bryan Boulevard.
On the eastbound side, the traffic will be permanently shifted to a new segment of road, he said. The westbound side will be detoured for one to two years. After the work is completed, it will shifted back to its current location.
The lanes are being shifted to reduce the number of lane closures, Ferguson said.

- Traffic on Bryan Boulevard that has been detoured will be shifted to its new, permanent route in October or November, Ferguson said. Two bridges are being built that will bring Bryan Boulevard over the Loop.

- Stagecoach Trail will be permanently closed between Friendly Avenue and Wagon Wheel Drive sometime this month. A new road is being constructed slightly to the east and that road will open when the section of Stagecoach Trial is closed, Ferguson said.

- Old Oak Ridge Road will be closed where it crosses the Loop for two weeks in October or November while a bridge is being finished to permanently relocate the road. The Loop will eventually run under the bridge and Old Oak Ridge Road.

- The entrance to Woodstream Apartments at Woodstream Lane and Friendly Avenue will be closed in September once construction of a new entrance is completed, Ferguson said.

As each detour and closure takes place, Ferguson said N.C. DOT plans to provide updates and alert nearby residents.

What is the Urban Loop?
The Loop, a 40-mile circular bypass being built around the city, is under construction from I-85 to Bryan Boulevard. Those segments are expected to be completed by N.C. DOT in late 2007.
The southern portion of the Loop, which is also known as Painter Boulevard, has already been built from U.S. 70 to I-85 south of the city. The northern section of the road has not been funded for construction.
