Soldier prayer request
I believe in the power of prayer...so, too, must Lyle Shackelford, a soldier in Iraq whose unit is preparing to take part in this month's elections in Iraq. Already, insurgents have called on violent means to disrupt voting. I got this e-mail from Frank Moore at First Lutheran Church. He, and I, usually won't forward such e-mail. Who knows if Lyle Shackelford is even real? But I bet there are soldiers with similar sentiment. Besides, what the email asks for won't cost any of us a dime:
As a transportation battalion, my unit will be delivering the voting machines and the ballots to villages and cities throughout Iraq during the upcoming elections. (January 30/31) Our convoys are prime targets for the insurgents because they do not want the equipment to arrive at the polling stations nor do they want the local Iraqi citizens to have the chance to vote; timely delivery must occur so that the elections occur. Encourage your friends and family members and those within our churches to pray specifically for the electoral process.
Historically, the previous totalitarian regime would not allow individual citizens to vote.
Democracy will not be realized in Iraq if intelligent and competent officials are not elected to those strategic leadership positions within the emerging government; freedom will not have an opportunity to ring throughout this country if the voting process fails.
Announce this prayer request to your contacts throughout your churches, neighborhoods, and places of business.Those with leadership roles within the local church post this message in as many newsletters and bulletins as possible. There is unlimited potential
for God's presence in this process but if we do not pray then our enemy will prevail (See Ephesians 6:10-17) A prayer vigil prior to the end of the month may be an innovative opportunity for those within your sphere of influence to pray. This is a political battle that needs spiritual intervention.
A powerful story about God's intervention in the lives of David's mighty men is recorded in 2 Samuel 23:8-33.
David and his warriors were victorious because of God's intervention. We want to overcome those who would stand in the way of freedom. David's mighty men triumphed over incredible odds and stood their ground and were victorious over the enemies of Israel. (Iraqi insurgents' vs God's praying people).
They don't stand a chance. I will pray with my soldiers before they leave on their convoys and move outside our installation gates here at Tallil.
My soldiers are at the nerve center of the logistic operation to deliver the voting machines and election ballots. They will be driving to and entering the arena of the enemy. This is not a game for them it is a historical mission that is extremely dangerous. No voting machines or ballots. No elections. Your prayer support and God's intervention are needed to give democracy a chance in this war torn country.

Which part of the request are you endorsing? The victory of "God's praying people" over the "Iraqi insurgents?" I think the insurgents pray a lot too. How will God decide which side to choose?

It isn't important that we know God's will to pray for what we think is right.We pray for what we earnestly believe in. The end of every intervention prayer should end with "..your (God's) will, not mine, be done."

My comments were more about the power of prayer against attacks on the convoy. I agree with Jackie -- in the end, it's 'God's will be done.'

Welcome to the blogosphere! I wish you well in your efforts and will check in regularly. Thanks for your community minded spirit, and the good work you do over at the N&R. I will personally hope and pray for the elections to go well in Iraq, for as few as possible people to be hurt or killed by terrorist acts, for the Iraqi's to come to peace amongst themselves, and for us to be able to get out. If it is "right" to pray, it is right to pray for peace and against suicide bomber/murderers I think, whatever one thinks of US policy. About Revelation, well, there have been tsunami's, earthquakes, bad storms, mudslides, and all the rest since, well, that little bit about eating the forbidden fruit. Nothing really unique happening right now, whatever one thinks about Revelation. Peace. Joel

I'll echo comments about prayer being about God's will rather than our own. The Lord's Prayer reads "thy kingdom come, thy will be done". And I believe Islam is a literal translation of "surrender to God's will". So no matter what side of the ball you're on, the goal of prayer is the same thing.

A better prayer would be for our misguided government to bring our troops home. Then let the native people set up whatever form of government they so desire instead of some puppet government set up by the US. It seems evidently clear to me that Iraq is developing QUICKLY into another "Vietnam" experience for the US. How many sets of combat boots will be displayed via the "Eyes Wide Open" exhibit before there are no more US soldiers occupying a foreign soil.
Also, is it not interesting that it has been considered to absolving the use of automobiles a few days prior to the Iraqi elections? How are people expected to get to the polling place? What kind of "democracy" is that? And the great blasphemy of this is that it is the American military purposing such ludicrious ideas. Prayers would be much better directed toward the misguided leaders who force their ideas on other soverign nations.

I'm getting a little confused. If, in the end, God's will is going to be done anyway, what is the point of praying over unfolding events? It seems contradictory to do as Jackie suggests and pray for what we believe in yet end with a sort of "But you do what's best, God." Are we giving God permission to do his will with such a prayer even if it may not agree with what we just prayed for?
I know this may sound a little confrontational, but it's a serious question I've had for a while. How can we possibly expect any kind of influece through prayer while at the same time saying God's will is going to be done anyway? It seems to me that the implications of these kinds of calls for prayer are either that God won't do his will unless we let him know we want him to, or that he absolutely will do his will in which case asking for earthly events to unfold a certain way is pointless. Any help?

I'll respond to your question, Roch101, as best I can. First of all, God is sovereign. In other words, He is in charge. Nothing happens without his knowledge or without his allowing it. However, He allows people freedom to choose, as long as it fits His purpose. Joseph was taken as a slave and later imprisoned although he followed God and was innocent of the crime. Later, he became the ruler of Egypt, second only to Pharoah himself and was able to save his entire family from death due to famine. He told the brothers who had sold him into slavery, "You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good..." In Job, we are plainly told that Satan has to ask God's permission to afflict people and Jesus tells Peter that Satan asked to "sift him (Peter)like wheat". People often ask, why is there evil in the world; evil is the result of sin, as is death, the Bible tells us, "the wages of sin is death".
In regard to prayer, we always have to go before the Lord with an open hand in regard to our requests. He often puts prayer requests on our hearts and it is a privilege to be allowed to be a part of His plan and His work here on earth. God is an extremely complex being, He has always existed, He is all-powerful, omnipresent and all knowing. It is difficult for us to understand what He is working out in History and how it all comes together. Trust me, prayer works. He answers the prayers of those who believe in Him, not of everyone. Sometimes, His answer is yes, sometimes no and sometimes, not yet. Read the Bible for the whole picture.
As for Joel's comments on the tsunami and Revelation; yes, since the fall of man, there have been natural disasters. It is a result of sin. However, we cannot ignore what Jesus said (Matthew 24:6-8), "And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows (or birth pangs)." We have had strife among nations and other natural disasters since the fall of man, but it is now with increasing frequency, as Christ said would precede the end.

As good as your intentions are in praying for the soldiers, why don't you send them more care packages and letters? I hear they really like phone cards.

I am facing 0-4 years. I go to sentencing on April 21st. This is my first offense. I have already served 4 months in jail. I have repented and learned my lesson. I had an interview with a probation officer on April 8th. The officer said she is going to recommend probation. Please pray that the judge follows her recommendation and gives me probation and no more jail time and no prison time. Please pray for me. Thank you very much for your prayers and God Bless You.

Thank God for that I can submit my prayer request here, and thank you for your prayer, may God bless you.
Firstly,please pray for that my brother can find a new job, and please pray for that my mother can maintain in her job because my mother had reached her retirement age, and please pray for that my family members and I can have safety during working hour.
Secondly, please pray for that my mother was cheated by Mr. Kwong, Mr Ho, Hin Chai and Anna the year before, she went to a company and worked as an Office assistant, but they cheated my mother, and compelled my mother to give her money out to them(they cheated my mother that the money was used for investment, and the investment was failured), and went away, thank God for that the policemen arrested Mr. Kwong now, but the Mr. Ho , Hin Chai and Anna were still not arrested, please pray for that God can help the policemen in the investigation, and find the evidence to accuse the Mr. Kwong and his helper in the judiciary court, thank God for that the policemen sent us several letters till now about that the investigation is in the progressing, please pray for that God can move their heart, Mr. Kwong , Mr. Ho, Hin Chai and Anna will regret about that they cheated my mother, and they can have pity on my mother , and return the money back to my mother , thank you.
Thirdly, (1) Please pray for that I can improve my working efficiency, and please pray for and thank God for that God can protect my family members and I will not to be hurt by my workmates and supervisors in order that I can have psychological health during working and I will have a stable job after my contract due, and pray for and thank God for that I will not be suffered in the marital problems in my job, please pray for that I can further my contract, please pray for that God can help me to make my every effort in keeping my job, please pray for that God can protect my job - which is as a Contract Office Support Assistant, I need this job very much, please pray for that God can have mercy upon me, please pray for that God can help me to tackle with the wrong I make in my job, include I break a pen when I feel very stressed, please pray for that God will forgive my fault and will not punish me about my fault, and I will not make this wrong or others again whole life times, and help me to keep the job after the end of my contract and further my contract for one more year, and please pray for and thank God for that I can have talent to do a job if I will not further the contract later, because I want to earn living for my family members, and please pray for that my mother and I can use our all our spare time to study bible, distribute the gospel pamphlets and pray, so that we can have spiritual growth up. (2)Please pray for that I do not want to eat the psychological medicine, please protect me not to be hurt by the psychological medicines and psychological problems. (3)Please pray for that I can restore my psychological health, because I am always blame myself about the sins I committed before, I am afraid that God will punish me about the sins I committed before, please pray for that I can have biblical mind to know will God punish me one day or not, so that I can live out good witnesses and have peace to face the punishment from God one day, and please pray for that God can forgive me. (4)Please pray for and thank God for that I will not be suffered in the marital problems, so that I can seek the kingdom and the righteousness of God first, and have a spiritual growth up, and I will not regret about the decision I made in this marriage this life, that I will only choose the Christian girlfriend that was arranged by God, please pray for that if God had not prepare a Christian girlfriend for me, help me to keep alone whole life, so that I will not be hurt again in order that I can restore my psychological health and have a spiritual growth up. (5)Please pray for that the son of my brother will not hurt himself, my brother and my sister will not be suffered in the marital problems , my sister can have good psychological health, and we can maintain a good relationship, we will not be hurt by the husband of my sister and the wife of my brother, so that my mother and I can help my sister and my brother to accept the Jesus. (6)Please pray for that I can pray and study bible from the net, so that my mother and I can firmly believe in the bible ,and we can have assurance of the salvation. And please pray for that we will not suffer a loss in the Lord's Judgement Day, thank God for that I can keep on use mind or mouth to pray in the office , please pray for that God can keep my stomach health if I pray with fasting for too long time, and please pray for that God can keep me not to hurt myself if I undergo stress because I found some blood come out of my body nowadays, pleae pray for that God can help me not to bleeding inside my body and I can restore my health, and please pray for that I can not only keep on use mouth to pray in the office but also in the whole life time, God can keep my health when I pray too vigorous, and I can pray at mid-night , and my mother and I can go to the church where God prepared for us and donate our money there in the will of God, so that we can have spiritual growth up , please pray for that I can maintain a good psychological and body health, and can keep on pray with heart this life, and please pray for that I will not suffer from disease ( such as heart disease) if I pray too vigorous. (9)Please pray for that God can purify me and help me to have spritual growth up, and please pray for that my family members and I will not be hurt by my colleagues, classmates, church members and friends include Christian colleagues, so that they can be helpful for me to live out a good witness before my family members, my grandmother, my father, my sister, my brother and my relatives can all accept the Jesus Christ, and my mother and I can have a spiritual growth up and can strenghthen our faith.
And I am sorry for any inconvinience I made to submit my prayer request here.

I'm sorry that the person named Li who posted the long prayer request above has chosen to post the same thing twice as a prayer request on our church web site, and refuses (despite the terms of service of this forum) to identify herself/himself with a real email address. I have now been instructed to remove the prayer request form from our site, because it is being abused. That's too bad.

I will help people who are alcoholics and drug addicts. This is the motive that I need plenty more belief, plenty more power of prayer and more Holy Ghost with me.
