Acts of kindness

You're ordering at Chick Fil'A and you realize you don't have enough cash to pay the bill (this one doesn't accept credit cards yet). It's cold outside and you will have to run to a nearby ATM, and possibly pay a $2 surcharge for a $10 meal for you and your child. The manager, who sees you there all the time, is about to reach in her own pocket and pay the difference. You can pay her the next time you come in.

This happened to me recently and the gesture gave me a reason to smile.

Has anyone done anything nice or out of the ordinary for you lately?

No, but acts like that make every crappy day you have worth it. Good acts like that are what makes the things in this world worth fighting for.

We had a snow "storm" here yesterday and in the big city you have to your sidewalk and the sidewalk in front of your property shoveled within 8 hours. When I got home from work yesterday my neighbor had already done the sidewalk in front of my house for me. You don't know how relieved I was not to have to do more than my little sidewalk leading to my front door.

Saturday morning ... plumbing repairs for a house I just purchased in Madison ... When it was time to pay the bill, the plumber says "You can just mail me a check"!! Trust is a rare thing these days.

A couple of years ago, I ran out to Krispy Kreme for a coffee before heading to work. Between the time I ordered at the drive-through and made it to the window, I realized I had no cash and would only be able to pay the $1.35 with my credit card. I told the woman at the window my predicament, offered my MasterCard and was handed my coffee with a dismissive wave at the credit card.

Do you think I'll continue to go to Krispy Kreme for coffee?

You bet.

You're all crazy. There is no such thing as private sector charity or good will amongst your fellow man. Humans are naturally brutish, mean-spirited, and selfish. That's why we need a massive government to take care of us. We can't do it on our own. We'll all kill each other.

I hope sarcasm is evident.
