Cloning sheep? Check. Embryos next?

Will there be cloned babies in the kindergarten class of 2015? The creator of Dolly the Sheep has been given a license to clone human embryos for medical research into the cause of motor neuron disease. Dolly, you remember, died relatively young. The new experiments do not involve creating cloned babies -- but is that far behind? And is it necessarily a bad thing?

While there are some notable crackpots out there who want to clone humans to make carbon-copy babies, that sort of thing is not likely to become a reality soon, I expect.

What I think we need to do these days is figure out the differences between what is possible and what is acceptable to society. Otherwise, you'll get people assuming that this stuff is being done by classical "mad scientists."

Though I am more spiritual than I am religious (i.e. I believe in God, but don't follow any particular faith), I can't help but think that cloning another human being is going too far. And how is it the Bush administration will condone THIS but won't allow stem cell research??
