Gays move closer to marriage in New York
A judge declared today that a law banning same-sex marriage violates the state constitution, a first-of-its-kind ruling in New York that would clear the way for gay couples to wed if it survives on appeal.
The judge noted that one plaintiff is the son of an interracial couple who moved to California in 1966 to marry. She said California then was the only state whose courts had ruled that interracial marriage prohibitions were unconstitutional.

If you want comments on whether same-sex marriage should be legal, you're likely going to receive a LOT of replies. My take on it is that it would be good to extend the definition of marriage to include this, but I seriously doubt tradition will move that quickly.
My preference would be for government to get out of the "marriage" business completely, change the legal term to "civil union" and make it available to all pairs of citizens, period.
Then the churches could decide for themselves who's "married" or not, but at least the same-sex couples would have the legal standing and perks they should have.

I must agree with Eric on this one. What the GLBT community is seeking is an equal footing under government standards. The GLBT community is not seeking for ANY religious group to sanction the "marriage" of a couple. That decision is up to each religious group. It is not about religion that the GLBT community is striving for their "seat at the table." Rather, it is a seeking for equality for all rightly cojoined people!
