The Bible instead of the Qu'ran
A story Newsweek magazine finds itself apologizing for demonstrates how what many might construe to be a simple, seemingly small act -- a report of desecrating a religious work -- can lead to death and destruction.
How would Bible-believing Americans react if the Bible, instead of the Qu'ran, was alleged to have been flushed down a toilet?

It has happened often. Remember the famous athiest O'hare? She routinely desecrated the bible during speaches and debates. (Oops! She disappeared into thin air.)
The printed bible is not holy. The sybolism of an opponent desecrating a printed bible is severe and painful. However, it does not mean anything more than burning any book.

Agreed. I worship the God of the Bible, not the Bible of my God. Having said that, i do treat mine with respect. It is more saddening that the folks that do desecrate it are those that probably need the Word contained therein.

I find this comment about as heartless as one could imagine. Did Chip miss the fact that Ms. O'Hair was brutally murdered and dismembered, along with a couple of family members? Or was her butchering a source of humor to him? Just wondering...

I never knew she was ever found. Nor do I know the circumstances surrounding her death. Nevertheless, I apologise for the inappropriate humor.
I think she travelled with Falwell for a series of debates. She would cackle as she tore pages from a bible, daring God to strike her down. It was for show, but still a bible desecration.
Not to diminish the apology, but tell me Eric- what is your opinion on the subject?

While I share O'Hair's belief about God's existence, I was never a fan of hers personally. Sure, I went through a stage where I was actively contempuous of my former religion, but I grew out of that after about a week, I think.
The thing is that all my life, whether I was a believer or not, one of my most cherished values has been respect for other people's beliefs. I would never dream of making such a low, emotion-based attack on anyone's religion. There are more reasonable ways to get a point across.
As to not having heard of the O'Hair murders, I guess it's understandable. It was only in the news briefly, both when the bones left from the makeshift cremation were found and when the killers were convicted. I expect it was easy to miss.
Take care!

Uh, folks, lest this argument be improperly framed, I think it's important to point out that even the government is now saying that Newsweek's report did not contribute to the riots.

The White House continues to blame the magazine for triggering the violence that led to deaths.
From the AP:
"Newsweek at first apologized for its story and then retracted it under heavy pressure from the administration. The White House blamed the magazine's account for triggering deadly anti-American protests in Afghanistan last week in which police fired on demonstrators and killed about 15 people."

Just heard an explanation on the radio (from the former Newsweek religion editor) that the printed Koran is different than a Bible. It is considered Holy- it is to Muslims what Christ is to Christians. Most military and mid-east experts know this, which makes the story even more unlikely.
Isakoff has admitted not being aware of many of the religious differwnces there.
Further, terrorist manuals teach prisoners to lie about their treatment- rape, desecration, etc.

Most "Bible Believing Christians" are asleep and they would snooze away if the bible was attacked the way the Koran was.
This is why our country is in the mess it's in!

How would Christians respond if the Bible was desecrated? Well, there wouldn't be any deadly riots. We would recognize it as antagonistic without going bonkers. When "artists" put figures of Jesus in urine or smear feces on pictures of the Virgin Mary, no one kills them. When film directors portray Jesus as a homosexual, they aren't stabbed to death on a public street.
Verdict: Christians are more civilized and tolerant than Muslims. (I mean, of course,
the bad Muslims. Most Muslims, I've read, are peace-loving folk just like you and me who just happen to live in brutal culture where women have no rights, gays are imprisoned, etc., etc.)
Sure, you can dig up Christian intolerance similar to what you can find in the Muslim world every other Tuesday, but you have to go back a few centuries.
