Not a drop of sympathy...yet

When is "I'm sorry" good enough?

I'm reading yet another story about the "Runaway Bride" whose disappearance meant several officers couldn't attend a fallen comrade's funeral, because they were called in for the search. What's worse, she initially claimed she had been abducted by an Hispanic man (shades of Susan Smith and her false claims about a black man).

Maybe I would be more sympathetic about her supposed 'fragile state' if there weren't real women abducted and feared dead whose cases get little or no national attention.

I have a little sympathy for this woman. It sounds like her family was blowing this wedding up into a production that would frighten anyone two thirds to death. That sort of thing happens far too often. So on that level, I sympathize.

But her actions showed a level of stupidity that is telling. It could have been caused by panic, but I seriously doubt it was that. The claim of being abducted -- regardless of the description used -- could have resulted in wrongful arrests, police brutality, possibly even the death of an innocent bystander if thing had happened in just the worst possible combination.

I think charges should be leveled, and restitution demanded. Running away and worrying people is one thing, and "I'm sorry" would be fine. Blowing this story into a manhunt for an imaginary bogey-man... that's too obviously a criminal action.

I hear there's been a press conference on CNN. I can bet there were lots of tears.... We've already had the movie (Julia Roberts as the Runaway Bride). Is this compelling enough for Runaway Bride 2, or will she just make lots of money on the talk show circuit. I'm cynical I know....
