You should read Jon Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven." It details much of the history of Mormonism and focuses on these fundamentalist groups that still practice and encourage polygamy.
As surprising as Gideon Barlow's story is, I think it's evidence that despite advances in many other areas, the world isn't increasing in morality. Sin, including polygamy and barring children from seeing their parents, is just as rampant (and perhaps more so) as it has always been.

Gideon's story is saddening to say the least. What it tells me is that fundamentalism, in any religious or other group, is dangerous!
No one person or group should desire to control others so strictly. In the Christian faith, there is freedom. This freedom came at a price. The freedom is not a "do anything you want" freedom, rather it is a freedom to make choices and realize that there are consequences to every choice made.
The fundamentalism shown and expressed through the FLDSs is frightening. It is saddening that this group seems to have lost the core message of Jesus the Christ, that being reconciliation. And as Gideon stated, family's are supposed to be together. How sad that some religious (Christian)groups take the words of a leader over the core message of the Christian faith. When will we ever learn?
