Greensboro's 'secret police'--Update.

"The public may have only his word on the findings"

Apparently there's not going to be an independent investigation, Chief Wray says. Can any leader just say 'trust me' anymore?

Here's the history...

"There's been some very questionable discipline of African American officers," said William Hill, lawyer for the 410-member association.

Should there be an independent investigation of what's going on here?

I feel that this is just another attempt to brand Greensboro as a racist town. When will pepole ever disregard the race of a person and see that person for who he/she really is?

Race is a non-issue with me. I could care less about the race of a person. What matters to me is only the person. When will people forget about race and care about people?

Until that happens nothing is going to change!!

Your views of race are beside the point here, Darryl. Unless you're a police office.

What is at question here is whether members of the police community are acting in a racially motivated manner? Based on Ms. Ahern's piece, my first reaction is that there's nowhere near enough information there to form a good guess. I'd be more interested in some sort of independent oversight of this whole "black ops" business.

Eric, while I generally appreaciate what you say, I must adamantly disagree. Racial views are exactly the point in this whole situation.

Regardless of the race of an officier, unless there was suspicion of some type of illegal activity, there should be no form of "secret" investigation on ANY officier.

It seems to me that the only thing that the leadership of Greensboro can handle is the RACE/RACIAL issue. There needs to be a middle ground sought and found then moved forward from there. Until that happens, Greensboro will forever be known as a racist area.

The topic at hand is whether or not to have a independent investigations of whats going on in the poice department. I feel that it should be done outside the department because if Hege has taught us anything it is not to judge a book based on its cover. Hege did alot of good cleaning up the (black crime) Oops I meant bad crime but he also did alot of covering up for those ones who help in his effort to control the community. I think some of the same thing is going on here with Captain Wray just coming in and trying to make a name for himself and what was the point in getting rid of those officers only to hire them back to do the same type job. We all want to live in a place that is going to be racially balance but that time is still not here, but we can't hold on to that we have to pave our way to get the justice we deserve. So for all those officers that may be doing things on the side during work hours I'm sure he has tracking devices on there cars as well. Whoever does this study should check to see just how many police officers had tracking devices, how many were black, and who was the person or persons who saw these men and women doing other activies during there shift. Because its plenty of times you see officers parked in parking lots having conversations with other officers for hours, doing nothing but I guess this is acceptable acts. The whole system may need and overhaul to get to the bottom of alot of issues. This may be an issue were there is not alot to do so the police department might need to look at making the shifts different , like split shifts or something like that.

Darryl, I agree that secret investigations are ridiculous here. They give the appearance that the investigators have something to hide, and make the cops look like they are little boys enjoying playing at being Agent 007 or something.

But the allegation was of a racial bias by these investigators. I consider it a valid possibility, but as I said, it's hardly the first conclusion I'd draw.

But I have to wonder why this topic has shown up in a religion forum. The linkage isn't apparent to my mind...

Eric, some folks are wondering about the ethics of a secret police aimed at a particular group, and since this is a forum for religion, faith and ethics (or tries to be)....
Check the website for this morning's reporting on the topic by Lorraine Ahearn and Eric Towsend.Wray has ruled out asking an outside agency to probe the alleged misconduct.

With this subject appearing on this blog and on Allen's blog could it be true that the N&R is race obsessed as is being construed on Allen's blog?

Kinda makes one wonder.

I guess I don't get having a topic appearing on two different blogs written by two different people making me, Allen or the N&R obsessed about race. I will tell you that I posted about the topic based on the ethical aspects of "secret police" when a group -- let's make them green policemen -- suspect that they're being targeted. I guess blog posts sometimes cross as we keep up with what's in the news.

Then somebody needs to explain that to the folks over on Allen Blog since that seems to be the line of conversation. Me, I just asked the question. Frankly I don't really care if there is an obsession with race or not within the N&R. I read the N&R for information concerning the local area, since I have moved away, and to enjoy the blogs because the small town papers where I am just haven't caught up with the times yet. Asheville Citizen Times is trying but so far they have only managed to get a comment section which does not compare to the excellent blogs provided by the N&R.
It would appear from what is written on the blogs by those making comments that yes, G'boro is obsessed with race and tend to make a great deal over little. That goes for both sides of the spectrum. So basically G'boro is still the same as it was when I lived there when it comes to race.
