Where are the missing "20-somethings" locally?

"In the religious studies class I teach at Oregon State University, I ask students to write down their impressions of Christianity and their adjectives include: anti-intellectual, judgmental and bigoted," said Marcus Borg, a Bible scholar who has written several books on reinventing Christianity. "So, I think Rob Bell's attempt to change this impression is exciting."

I expect that my endorsement of Dr. Borg's work would be counter-productive... but I have to say that of all the many flavors of Christianity I've encountered in my life, his is one of the most interesting.

If what Bell is doing works, keep doing it! At least someone somewhere is making a new and vibrant attempt to reach an unreached group in the USA! Keep it up Rev. Bell!

I wonder if Mr.Borg would ask his class the same question except substituting Christianity with Islam? Just a thought!

Well, if a college student says something seems anti-intellectual, that may be the student's highest compliment. The vast majority of Americans would agree, I suspect, that being an intellectual is , well, suspect. Of course, here on the blog, we are predisposed (the proverbially preached-to choir, if you like).

As for Islam generating similar comments: I again suspect many college students (maybe especially Prof. Borg's) find ALL organized religion anti-intellectual...the question would be whether they saw the paradox/contradiction by embracing one brand of a faith tradition that disparages free thought while rejecting another?
