Rosh Hashana/Rosh Hashanah starts at sundown

"Rosh Hashanah shatters our illusion of being self-contained without any accountability to a higher power."

This is the time of year when Jewish people are to examine their deeds, ask forgiveness of those they have offended, ask for forgiveness from God - and plan to do better. Couldn't we all, whatever your faith belief, learn a lesson from this? I'm going to take the time to re-evaluate how I treat homeless people holding up signs at stoplights. I tell my daughter that we give to churches/agencies that will help them, that I don't want them to use my money for liquor (plus, I don't know which ones have been bused in to fill somebody else's pockets). I've come clean...what's something you/we as a country, need to rexamine this time of the year?

Is this surprising to anyone else?

No wonder conservatives are worried: The mean age lesbians have their first sexual contact with other girls today is 16, and it's just 14 for gay boys, according to a Penn State study of 350 young people from 59 gay groups.

Even gay activists are surprised with the stats.

Time Magazine looks at the people behind the stats (must be a subscriber to access the whole story). For those who think it's a small sampling (see entire Time cover story at bottom of page) to make such big claims, there's more: In 1997, there were approximately 100 gay-straight alliances (GSAs)— clubs for gay and gay-friendly kids on U.S. high school campuses. Today there are at least 3,000 GSAs—nearly 1 in 10 high schools has one —according to the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN, say "glisten"), which registers and advises GSAs. In the 2004-05 academic year, GSAs were established at U.S. schools at the rate of three per day.

How would you rebuild New Orleans?

So, New Orleans should look more like...no, they have a lottery...like...no, the poor can't afford houses there...like...no, you can buy liquor in convenience stores over there. Hmmm...so, where can we find a role model for the new New Orleans to suit Franklin Graham?

For those who hint the lifestyle in the Big Easy brought about its destruction, who's next? I mean, Nevada still has brothels.

I thought I had seen...

everything.

'Unlikely angel'

The problem with quickly "sainting" people we really don't know is that they can quickly become human before our eyes. Another fallen hero?

Did you know...

"Lebanon is the only Arab country where gays can find refuge...."

One view of the Grand Canyon'

"In the book of Genesis, it talks about God walking the face of the earth. Maybe His footprints are there," Kathryn Crotts of Greensboro is quoted as saying in Thursday's New York Times while on a tour of the Grand Canyon National Park. Crotts and her husband Stephen, teaching pastor at Adams Farm Community Church and founder of the Carolina Study Center in Burlington, were on a Canyon Ministeries trip. The expedition is a religious pilgrimage in search of evidence that God created the earth in six days 6,000 years ago, just as Scripture says.

Some of the highlights: While geologist date the sandstone in an overhead cliff to 550 million years ago and the folding as a result of pressure from shifting faults underneath, their guide suggests the Grand Canyon was carved 4,500 years ago by the great flood described in Genesis as God's punishment for humanity's sin.

She's got a new album, right?

I tried not to give her the publicity, but oh well. This seems to be getting heated.
First the Catholics, now the Jews. But is this any reason for her to be thrown out of the community, as has been suggested?

Can you help?

From: Mark Sills and Mattie Williams

We want to thank you all for your really hard work and wonderful results thus far. We are hearing many very positive things about the value of the Care Teams, and how important you are to the people you are serving. What a wonderful way to greet our new neighbors!

You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this

I agree.
Yom Kippur began sundown on Wednesday, and continues today.

Stirring the pot

I guess if you can quote someone saying "life is too damn short" to hide being gay on a coffee cup, then why not mega-pastor Rick Warren on God?
I don't know if people really care what's printed on a coffee cup, or that the person taking your order in the Chick-fil-A drive thru says, "Thank you and have a blessed day," when he finishes your order.

Another "The Passion of the Christ?"

Cloud Ten Pictures is distributing "Left Behind: World at War" via churches instead of the traditional movie theater this weekend, with some showings as early as Friday.

Here's a teaser from the studio: President Gerald Fitzhugh lives in a different world – everyone does. A year and a half ago the world was hit with the biggest catastrophe it had ever seen. Without warning and without explanation, hundreds of millions of people simply vanished off the face of the earth. The world was in chaos like it had never been before.

Here's a list of North Carolina sites by city, (for individual contact information and show times, visit the website):

Another day, another church/state issue

The question seems to be: Would you rather have people "saved" in prison, or would you rather have them get out, commit more crimes and go back to prison?

An inmate in Iowa is suingover a voluntary faith-based rehabilitation program, InnerChange Freedom Initiative, that he says raises constitutional questions because it's paid for by the state. The inmate is represented by Americans United for the Separation of Church and State.

Any truth to to this?

"Those with more faith may be less 'stressed out' about daily problems that impede success in the labor market and the marriage market, and therefore are more successful," according to the author of a study released by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The study finds a link between wealth and religious worship.

The next Eden?

A place in the U.S. where 'abortion is illegal, gay marriage is banned, schools cannot teach evolution, children can pray to Jesus in public schools and the Ten Commandments are posted publicly.'

Thou shalt not

steal. Is this what it means by we all shall get our just rewards?

So, what do we do with Halloween?

I took a "Trip to Hell" Wednesday (available online on Saturday). The event -- a winding path through the woods with different stations focusing on choices people make in their lives and the consequences of those choices -- ie abortion, drunk driving, teen suicide -- is sponsored by a church and draws thousands of people a year the week before and on Halloween. ('Want to go' information below.)

Really, churches are everywhere when it comes to what to do with Halloween, on whether it’s a good idea to hold Halloween related events or to ignore it altogether.

Do we make too much of a deal over whether or not to pass out candy at the front door?

As 800 people watched...

Pastor electrocuted while performing baptism.

Do we just keep everybody out?

"Organizations like this one across the country are gaining access to schools through the famous people and entertainment value and then using those opportunities to proselytize," she said.

Is it really 'dangerous' for children to hear successful people say that their faith helped them succeed, as long as they don't set aside a prayer room in the corner?

This latest Supreme Court nominee

Could this be the vote that overturns Roe v Wade?
