This sort of thing has happened pretty frequently. You'd think that intelligent beings would be able to see this and say "We need to re-think this tradition." Or maybe "Hm... people dying over a ritual. That's not good. Perhaps we ought to drop it and find some other way to do this."

It won't happen, though. Tradition is far more important to too many people than just about anything else. I expect many Muslims will say "they died in Mecca, showing defiance to Satan... what better way to die?" Pfeh!
