Definitely not "must see TV"
I didn't find NBC's controversial Book of Daniel , about the life and times of an Episcopal priest, as groundbreaking or thoughtful TV.(Check out the Episcopal Diocese of "Blog of Daniel")
I found it a bore, a desperate bore -- a good idea badly done. And I think if Christian groups weren't rallying to keep it off TV, it wouldn't have made it a full season.
I have to issue a disclaimer here -- I didn't start watching until the second hour because I didn't get home in time to watch the full show. A friend who did watch said I didn't miss much.
Great example of what could have been compelling but was about as dull as watching paint dry: The central character, an Episcopal priest, passes his heart-throb son's room while he's ordering theater tickets for an upcoming date. The father pauses when he hears the price: $240.
The conversation goes something like this:
You're paying $240 for theater tickets?
That's the price of appearances.
We've got an Episcopal bishop who's gay. Why should you have to pretend.
Dad, I don't want to be the poster boy for the movement. I don't want to march in parades. I just want to be me. I don't want to be known as the priest's son, who's gay.
So what are you going to see?
La Cage aux Folle.
Oh, you are so gay, the father laughs, leaving the room.
Yes, this portrayal of a gay son and an understanding father is more compassionate than what we are used to seeing on TV. But with the dialogue and acting, I could actually insert a big groan here -- the vaudeville joke that didn't quite connect.
I don't know if it wants to be Desperate Housewives -- definitely not Seventh Heaven. There's the pot-smoking maid, Jesus okaying promiscuity, and the whole mafia moment involving other priests.
I'm not one of those people who think the portrayal of religious types can't be campy and fun, and I don't doubt a lot of what happened on Daniel happens in real life. But it just doesn't connect.
What do you think? Am I simply under the influence of too much cold medicine?

I thought it was a hoot -- fairly much like "Soap" was back when. I enjoyed it.

OK, I'll give it a second try -- and from the beginning, this time.
