Mass -- and pending -- Katrina evictions

Have Katrina victims had enough time to get back on their feet? I'm thinking that the government has a good point - these people can't be taken care of forever.

Is this viewpoint heartless? If so, at what point is a victim's life back to what he/she makes of it?

I know they can't be "taken care of" forever. Have we taught them to fish, instead of simply handed them a fish?

BTW, I recoil from the words, "these people."

I have to wonder at the whole situation. I know that if I were in similar circumstances, I would have had a hard time deciding on a few basic things.

I think the easiest thing to decide would be to leave the area permanently. Any place that has suffered that sort of damage is hard to call "home," at the moment at least. The fact that protection from future similar damage has become a political football in Washington should settle the question. Anyone with a lick of sense should have run screaming from N.O. months ago, Mardi Gras or no.

But if you do decide to leave forever... there's a whole country full of potential living places to choose from. I don't care what the economic situation is in dead pockets like the Triad, there must be plenty of places to choose from that could afford all of the folks coming out of N.O. a decent job and a chance to start over in life.

It has been 6 months, and every person who got aid knew from the very first day that government help would be limited. I would have thought that it would have been enough time for most folks.
