The easy target
Are we picking on illegal immigrants because we need an enemy? Why can't we see them as "your tired, your poor -- the masses yearning to be free?" Or is the letter writer right -- how can you criminalize something that's already illegal?

I feel that part of the problem is needing a "scapegoat." However, there is something to be said for the legal process of becoming a citizen. There are rules/laws. While the process may be slow, the end result is positive. The reason for immigration laws is to help control the "outside" population of the country.
The LTE writer does have something when stating, "how do you criminalize something that is illegal?"
It is something to think about.

Boy, ol' Lou Dobbs has been on a warpath regarding border control and immigration laws for a while. In one sense, I see his point. But it is unfortunate that the vast majority of our illegal residents are from Mexico and points south. Because that can easily lead to racism and persecution, just as the Nazis were able to isolate and persecute the Jews as the "cause" of post-war Germany's woes.
The David Dukes of the world have a terrific environment for their message of intolerance, which makes reasoned responses to a real problem a little difficult.
