He was asked to announce a rally against gay marriage during a service.
He said no.
He was asked if members could set up a table promoting their anti-abortion work.
He said no.
It went on and on until Rev.Gregory Boyd preached a sermon on the Cross and the Sword -- "in which he said the church should steer clear of politics, give up moralizing on sexual issues, stop claiming the United States as a 'Christian nation' and stop glorifying American military campaigns."
He lost 1,000 of his 5,000-member flock.

Would you vote for someone who circumvents the rules? What's conceding, Joe?
you've got to check this out. Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, has come under scrutiny for what some call his 'flip-flop' on whether women should be allowed to preach. Several blogs have called for him to explain his change of heart.
Before this story broke, Page told me he wouldn't deny committee seats to candidates just because their churches have women as deacons.
Now others are wondering just what made him change his mind.
I guess when intelligent minds find rationale for two different views: How can anyone be certain that women can't scripturally be called to lead churches?
This gave me the chills. If in acting as a "religious perfunctory" he advised the mother of a rape victim not to report the incident because he and T.D. Jakes were counseling the man (a spiritual advisor to the Dallas Cowboys), he has overstepped all kinds of decency measures.
Circulating in cyberspace, from Greensboro's own Badi Ali:
"Put Ehud Olmert on Trial for Crimes Against Humanity," the headline reads.
"Jamaat al-Muslimeen leader Imam Badi Ali has called on the Muslim
world and its friends to put Israeli leader Ehud Olmert on trial for
crimes against humanity in Gaza and Lebanon. We will compile Israeli
crimes, take them to an impartial international tribunal and put Olmert on trial."
"Please send information on Israeli crimes to Imam Ali at:
badi323@aol.com"
Will this go anywhere? What about Hezbollah?
Where would your vote fall? Do the views of your neighbors surprise you?
Is the Golden Rule still applicable in the workplace? This behavior appears on par with "The Devil Wears Prada." (hit 'no' and the story appears)
It's weird how religion aims to curb violence and how it incites it. Is it the 'cosmic struggle between God and the Devil' or has society (every religion has a so-called philosopher or leader) simply lost its ability to reason and respond?
Is this an example of why people walk away from religion/can't grasp the concept of the loving God that religious types talk about? Southern Baptists say women can't lead churches. The Catholics say women can be excommunicated from the church for spreading the love of God. I really find it interesting that the core of the argument is just who can articulate what God was to have uttered/inspired.
Instead of asking for the removal of the cross, should other faith/spiritual/religious groups demand equal access for their idols, symbols, etc?
I guess this is no different than when other people can make bail. I'm not a fan of anyone who shoots and runs.
A 'Top 10' of the godless.
I wonder if with 'out-front' leaders like these, our neighbor atheists are finding it's easier to identify publicly with their beliefs.
Do you support what this church is doing? The issue of illegal immigration is so complex, but what message does it send if the government decides not to arrest her?
The so-called evolution from Darwin to Hitler.
"This groundbreaking documentary from Dr. Kennedy and Coral Ridge Ministries, looks into the chilling social impact of Darwin's theory of evolution -- and the mounting evidence that Darwin had it wrong on the origin of life." Show airs Aug. 26, 27.
I also saw this -- have creationist caught a second wind?
Or does stuff like this weaken the creationist argument?
The Pagan down 'The Street?'
Or, is this the falling away that Christians talk about?
Did she really say, "Shame on him" for getting upset?
"Normally BYOB tells guests to bring their own beer or booze bottle.
At BYU, it means "bring your own beef."
Brigham Young University tops the list of the 10 most/least religious colleges -- as ranked by the 2007 Princeton Review.
Here's a decision that came "... only after much dialogue with the Lord," that's sure to raise the ire of evangelicals.
He got 15 years for sexually assaulting 3 women. Can Terry Hornbuckle make his way back to the pulpit?
A better question, perhaps, is why was he so unapproachable/untouchable in life and the pulpit that everyone ignored his issues? I mean, aren't most "meth heads" easy to spot by those who spend lots of times around them?
Warren Jeffs got caught. I'm sure this is going to become a freedom of religion issue in his defense. Would you give him jail time if he's simply following long practices of his faith?
By a 60 percent to 37 percent margin, respondents said authorities should single out people who look "Middle Eastern" for security screening at locations....
"It's an unfortunate by-product to the fear and hysteria we're hearing in many quarters," said one civil rights activist. "It's one of those things that makes people think they are doing something to protect themselves when they're not. They're in fact producing more insecurity by alienating the very people whose help is necessary in the war on terrorism."
Will Pope Benedict XVI embrace Intelligent Design? What's new that can be added to this very old argument?
Just a measure of respect. I can't remember being in a hospital chapel without a cross -- or am I mistaken?
