I wonder if the next astronomer will be Geocentric. I've heard there are still a few of those guys around, and they seem to be motivated by literal Bible readings.
It just seems to me that the whole business of religion ought to keep out of the realm of science. The Arabs discovered that science won't live with their scripture readings 1000 years ago. They ended up executing their scietists as heretics. The Catholics started down that path once. Hopefully, they'll find a less drastic solution this time round, now that Benny has chosen to break with JP II's views on the subject.

Apologies... I thought the story about the firing of the director of the Vatican Observatory for being critical of ID proponents:

Lots of fun to be had all around, eh?

i suspect if one is patient, the rcc will eventually make full circle and reclaim that which it previously apostasized (sp?). the church and it's doctrines seems to shift with sentiment over time....i.e. : can't eat meat on friday, dead children unbaptised go to hell, only catholics can get in heaven (before vaticanII), indulgences, earth is center of universe, flat earth, prayer of exorcism at baptismal rites etc.

It would certainly be helpful if a club/religion did make changes to accept scientifically verified and well-tested theories. I wonder how many other religions have done so? The Catholic Church is hardly a progressive 21st century institution; but at least there is an honored tradition of doubt and debate within it, despite the "papal inerrancy on doctrine" stuff.
