If you're Southern Baptist...

you've got to check this out. Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, has come under scrutiny for what some call his 'flip-flop' on whether women should be allowed to preach. Several blogs have called for him to explain his change of heart.

Before this story broke, Page told me he wouldn't deny committee seats to candidates just because their churches have women as deacons.

Now others are wondering just what made him change his mind.

I guess when intelligent minds find rationale for two different views: How can anyone be certain that women can't scripturally be called to lead churches?

"flip-flop" ......could this be synonymous with 'changing one's mind" or even perhaps 'repenting"?
it seems unfair that in the realm of religion/beliefs
when someone comes to a new revelation/understanding on a spiritual matter, too many are quick to use this as an opportunity to be a negative. i guess what i'm trying to say is that in my personal faith walk, as i have matured i have been given greater understanding on spiritual matters and i have even changed my mind on some issues that i once believed to be true. which is worse, to come to a realization that a former held belief was wrong and repent and confess and change or to be a stubborn jackass and and live a lie ? a person correcting/admitting a mistake is honorable imo and preferable to continuing in a lie. should we not commend those who make efforts to correct wrongs ?
yes this person probably ought to explain their change of heart. unfortunately those weak in faith rely upon others to lead them around in their spiritual lives and if some were led astray by this person's statements, then i recon he ought to ask for forgiveness and then those weak in faith should undertake "owning" their own beliefs based upon the word of God.

"I've always been a very conservative student of Scripture," Page said. "I can only say that through my continued study, guided (I believe) by the Holy Spirit, that I came to this position."

Page answered the question himself in the quote above. Quite clearly. Many Christians find that as we study and meditate on the Word, God brings us to a new and deeper understanding of His will. Page is simply acknowledging that.

"Flip-flop" is political slang, which in this instance, mischaracterizes a spiritual change.

Well, I am biased. How can one be a serious student of scripture and deny that women have held a great role in the Church from the outset?

It would seem to me that Page realize which "horse to hitch his wagon" AFTER writing his dissertation. I find it difficult to understand how one can go from a large view to a small view, especially AFTER a liberal arts education. It would seem to me that the opposite be the more norm.

While I am not in agreement with Page on the role of women, that is his right to believe as he sees fit. I just do not agree and find it problematic that he writes one thing, changes his mind and CANNOT recall when, what, how, etc. he changed his view. I revert to my previous paragraph on this one!

It is just another sad day in the life of the SBC.

yes darryl your bias is showing and also your ignorance.
"It would seem to me that Page realize which "horse to hitch his wagon"...come on darryl you had YOUR horse hitched to the sbc - you even said you were an sbc pastor. seems like it was fine for YOU to change YOUR view and bail out of the sbc (if i'm not mistaken you spent 20 yrs. in the sbc) but it is not ok for others to change their views. your hypocrisy is showing (again). you cannot get past human experience (i.e. he had a liberal arts education), you certainly must NOT believe "but with God all things are possible".
"I find it difficult to understand how one can go from a large view to a small view"........ you darryl went from the large sbc view and its doctrines/dogma to your very small view of a God that is powerless to affect any changes in His creation- certainly God is powerless to reveal additional truth to page. it's time you quit telling God how big your problems are and start telling your problems how BIG GOD IS !!
"It is just another sad day in the life of the darryl"
spend a couple of bucks and pick up "the tongue, a creative force" by charles capps. you could read it in two hours.

I would not be upset over anyone changing their views over time. That's a healthy thing, I believe. But if it's done for the sake of convenience, or for political advantage, one has to wonder about it. Which is, I think, what Darryl was getting at. It certainly appears to be something that Page should be concerned about.

eric,
i agree that one should not change for political gain or convenience. page did state his reason for his change of heart.
i await darryl's reply, but i know he normally avoids my posts.

Darryl said:

Eric, you get the prize on your last post!

Buz, enlighten us as to when/where Page stated his reason for change of heart. In Nancy's interview, he could not recall.

So, I will avoid name-calling, etc which you seem to enjoy with me Buz. Howeve, I consider the source and just smile. Ridiculing people does not garner support Buz. I would have thought you would have known that. Again, I have sidetracked from the blog topic.

I stated what I felt about the "flip-flopping" of Page. I need not say more. I stand by my words.

eric,
i am waiting for you to reprimand darryl (as you did me on the other blog) on his hammer and tongs barbs.

darryl perhaps eric is correct in that this thing between us is getting old. i propose a truce, at least a cease fire. i'll try to do my part .
