Thanks for the helpful post by Karen Armstrong. She is one of the few who has a deep understanding of Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

Today's NPR, Diane Rehm Show had an excellent discussion on the Pope's remarks. Central in that discussion was the Muslim scholar Seyyed Hossein Nasr who is Professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University. Nasr spoke four years ago at Guilford College about his Sufi mystical beliefs. He may be the current most profound Muslim voice for Americans to clearly hear. See - http://www.wamu.org/programs/dr/

I am not trying to blindly defend Islam. There are distinct differences between the world's great religions. To me to be obedient to the teachings of Christ we must have unflinching love for friend and foe and realize that path will cause suffering. I am glad I have valued Muslim friends that I respect and love and I have learned from them that we have much common ground.

Much of what happens in the name of Islam is instead sheer politics disguised as religion. I have certainly seen from many "Christians" the denial of the core teachings of the Prince of Peace and instead a "secular", "cultural" worship of flag and country. Religion has often been hijacked by the politics of the street and the corner church, Mosque or Synagogue.

it is indeed unfortunate the pope did not qualify his comment at the time he made it or better yet given more thought to even saying it....even if he believed it. we ought to be careful (us Christians) not to abuse the perfect law of liberty.
imo b/c the pope represents roughly 1.1 billion people and that those 1.1 billion place so much trust in him, when he speaks the muslims must of needs believe he is speaking for all catholics.
none of this surprises me, i believe God's plan is in motion and it shall come to pass just as He prescribed.
to the chagrin of some who blog here, i do indeed believe in the rapture and my next greatest expectation is to see Jesus at that event and those whom do not believe in the rapture are expecting to see the antichrist as there next big event and be subject to his reign for the duration of the tribulation. however it doesn't interfere with ones salvation (imo) to believe what you wish about the end times. i am washed in the blood of the Lamb !

"I wouldn't want to create the impression that I wouldn't like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future...But I'm not going to do anything violent to promote that. I'm going to do it through education." - Ibrahim Hooper CAIR Spokesman.

"Those who stay in America should be open to society without melting, keeping Mosques open so anyone can come and learn about Islam. If you choose to live here, you have a responsibility to deliver the message of Islam ... Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faiths, but to become dominant. The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth." - Omar Ahmad Co-founder of the Council on American-Islamic Relations
