Turkey is a secular nation populated by Christian and Muslim populations that have worked at living in harmony for centuries. The people there who cause us to view it as a haven for dangerous extremists are a tiny minority. Sort of like America's home-grown nut cases. By and large, Turkey is not all that different from us.
Advice for the Pope? Don't quote from 14th century Byzantine emperors, even in private.

I must say I admire his moxy. But better to stay home, given his popularity among Musils nowadays.
There has been little harmony between Christians and Muslims in Turkish history - a nervous accompli at best, murderous oppression of Armenians included. The Pope's visit will probably not assist what live and let live that does exist.
I agree, he shouldn't have qutoed the emperor in public (even though the emperor was amazingly accurate!
