Maybe he thought he was still in Sunday school
"Shortly after school began in September, the teacher told his sixth-period students at Kearny High School that evolution and the Big Bang were not scientific, that dinosaurs were aboard Noah's ark, and that only Christians had a place in heaven, according to audio recordings made by a student whose family is now considering a lawsuit claiming Mr. Paszkiewicz broke the church-state boundary."

NY Times today has an op-ed about the shoe on the other foot: called "The Devoted Student". The professor bemoans how the archreligious have so demanded religious correctness in the colleges that any attempt to foster critical thinking is shouted down. His dean even asked that he apologize to a student in his philosophy of religions course who refused to read Nietzsche.
To his credit, the professor refused to apologize.

I've read Nietzsche. I'd refuse to do it any more, but only because i have a hard time following his continuous stream of aphorisms.... the man was so deep he became annoying. :)

Well, my take on it is tht if this guy was that experienced a teacher, he had every reason to understand exactly why what he did was inappropriate. He should be held to a higher standard than some poor kid fresh out of college.
