Gay babies

The president of the leading Southern Baptist seminary has incurred sharp attacks from both the left and right by suggesting that a biological basis for homosexuality may be proven, and that prenatal treatment to reverse gay orientation would be biblically justified, the Associated Press reports.

Why is homosexuality a "problem" that needs to be corrected? I mean, I suppose that it's possible that the idea of national punishment for individual crimes -- as described in the Torah -- could be a concern for folks who don't think very clearly. But in a modern world, why should we care if 5% to 10% of the population turns out to be gay?

And besides -- I thought "eugenics" was a big no-no for this crowd...?

The bottom line for biblical Christians is that homosexual acts are immoral and corrupt - regardless of what genetic anomolies may provoke it. It is just like other medical procedures that hve been developed over the years to address abnormal health issuues.

From a biblical perspective, cover to cover, Sodomite behaviors are repulsive and contrary to the way God created man and woman. They are not to be encouraged, condoned or facilitated; but rather discouraged. If the problem can safely be corrected it may be an elective procedure for some. I agree, this raises some controversial medical issues; which is common today in medical circles - but it does NOT descend to the realm of abortion, wherein the baby is murdered outright. I admire the man for speaking out. He may not be absolutely correct in all of his assesments, but he is to be commended for standing up to the pink Gestapo.

And still my friends and neighbors wonder why I stay away from church -

Boy, that was a substantive reply! If you just want to go to church without encountering any references to the Bible and its condemnation of sin and corruption, you can find any number of them right down the street from you. Liberal/radical/postmodern/”progressive” churches abound today. Take your pick: ECUSA, UCC et al. They take their cues from the Marxist, humanist crowd, and NOT the Word of God. You may have to put up with a little religionism (sheep’s clothing) now and then, but otherwise they are closer to moveon.org than the N.T.

Which is a great selling point for them, IMO. Bringing a little humanity into the Christian religion is definitely a big improvement. {;-)

There is no evidence whatever that homosexuality has a genetic component, despite frantic efforts of the gay lobby to make us think so. Considering the complexity of human motivation and the multiplicity of factors driving it, I don't think it possible for homosexuality, if genetic at all, to be influenced or determined by just one gene anyway, or easily eliminated by genetic manipulation, whoever may wish it were. Homosexuality is more than just what sexually excites you; it involves the whole range of one's romantic feelings. I know; I used to be gay myself.
But even if there were a genetic component, what would that prove? There's a genetic component to the propensity for drug addicton and alcoholism, but that doesn't mean God approves of acting on those impulses, or that wee should either. The fact that cystic fibrosis is genetic doesn't stop people from trying to eradicate it, and rightly so. Just because something is genetic doesn't make it morally neutral or desirable or approved by God.

Not so, Steve. There is research going on at this moment regarding the sexual orientation of male sheep that points to a particular structure in the brain that is central to the determination of how heterosexual a male will be. This research is being watched and applauded most enthusiastically by some conservative Christian groups, in the hopes (as Nancy's article mentions) of finding a way to "cure" homosexuality before it can lead to sexual activity.

"I used to be gay myself."

So sad... Do you do like those guys in the Snickers Superbowl commercial and rip some hair off your chest whenever you find yourself "slipping" out of your self-control?

The gay world, which is becoming more and more public and widely portrayed, is not a "gay" world at all, but filled with extremely corrupt and ungodly activity - and invective against its oponents. The only hope for them, and all sinners, is the amazing and liberating grace of God - which not only turns slavers into champions of freedom, but all "children of disobedince" into children of God, full of His life, victory and peace.

OK, a question: If God created us in our mothers' wombs (Ps. 139:13-16), who are we to genetically alter what God has made ... for any reason?

Discuss, please.

I guess the idea is that we already are doing it to some extent; at least in-untero operations before birth. I must admit, I do not think this is a good idea. It does indeed raise a lot of Brave New World-ish possibilities. A lot of very helpful medical things are being done, or considered, in terms of genetic engineering, but the possibilities of eugenics-type projects, or Hitlerian "alterations" are legion. Preventing cancer is one thing; altering personality quite another.

From all I've read, there are inherited "predispositions" for all kinds of behavior and personality variations; but little is written in stone. As usual, it’s probably a combination of very general genetic potentialities and environmental influences.
However, the point was well made earlier, that no matter how the genetic influences pan out, perversion is immoral biblically; and cannot be made otherwise, regardless of Hollywood and the courts. The dictum of Scripture is that all sin has deleterious affects, short-term and long-term in a society. To reject or ignore God’s commandments is disastrous for both individual and nation. Anything can be made to APPEAR just fine for the moment, but the proof is in the historical pudding. Divine morality is the glue that holds a society together. Remove it, and that society will SURELY fall apart – eventually – and we are well on our way!

There is no doubt, according to the Scriptures, that we should be merciful and caring about all kinds of human conditions, including homosexuality. On a personal level, gays are the objects of God's saving and transforming grace to the same degree that all sinners are. I don't know one twice-born Christian who was not changed in many ways when they were redeemed. All neurotic and addictive/compulsive behavior needs a LOT of TLC and accountability to succeed - Christian or non. This is NOT a matter of animosity toward any one type of sin – or the people who commit it. It’s ALL bad and hurtful.

On a legal and societal level, however, it is important that we don’t promote and approve things that will destroy our nation, whether it be racism, prostitution, murder, corporate crimes, bestiality, slander, or any other sinful behavior. We already legislate against MANY sins: drunk driving, child abuse, adultery (divorce issues), murder, rape, lying (perjury), robbery, embezzlement, etc. It is only because of Hollywood, the gay lobby, liberal judges and politicians that we are trying to pretend that perverse sexual behavior is a benevolent social norm; when it is condemned in the Word of God as sin, along with the above-mentioned sins. No one is asking for harsh, draconian measures to be aimed at anyone; just that it not be glorified and legalized.

American Standards
It amazes me how the world debates, dissects, probes, accuses so forcefully, so quickly and is never willing to take blame, but point it. It is funny how the world (and I say the world as in society and different societies have different cultural basis,) and the American society has personal issues within its self that it wants to ignore. American society gets uncomfortable at the slightest things, say sex....society is so ready to censor yet we sell it everyday for all people in American culture. So to say that Gay Babies is a genetic defect is to point blame on the mother and father and so on down that generation’s line. Would it be so hard to point the finger back at society and say...you sell the sex...so lets talk about it...I mean really have we found out who Anna Nicole's baby daddy is? We now know all the people she has allegedly been with? It's too hard for society to point the finger back at its self and say "well maybe we influence homosexuality” Can’t blame ourselves, No that would make America society look weak. But at the adolescent age is when most experience dating, sex and drugs. It is at this age that most adolescences watch television and sneak little bobby in their room to watch Jane and Jill kiss…why cuz they saw it on TV. American society gets mad and say it’s the parents teaching, now it’s the parents genes… I say its American society which adds to the factor of most being gay…along with other personal experiences of that person, say a female is raped or molested…no longer wants to be with a man. There have been reports that a child tries a wrestling move on another kid and kills him…seen it on tv….a kid watches jack ass and breaks his legs jumping out a shopping cart…oh they saw it on TV. If American society is not influential then blame it on the water they drink. Saying that being gay starts in the womb and is a sin…well we might as well take it back in time when skin color was a sin too. Next thing you know we can chose the color of our babies skin, breast sizes…..make them a supermodel or super hero. I believe it is terrible to try and change someone from who they believe they are because who they are, are not up to the “American Standards”.

If a baby is born gay, then why must they be changed? Most christians always argue for the Lord, but if the lord doesn't make mistakes then evidently God chose for a child to be the way that they are.

Some children are born with physical or mental defects and everything necessary is done to help them become normal. I don't know if there is a 'gay' gene or not; but if there is one, it should be treated the same way as the gene for carrying a disease is - try to correct the defect.
