The 'lesser' wrong?
"There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards," Newt Gingrich tells James Dobson in an interview confessing he had an affair while he and other Republicans pushed for the impeachment of Bill Clinton. "There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."
"What I found difficult in going through all this is (that) I don't believe in situational ethics ... that this was right and this was wrong and changing the rules to ... justify what I have done."
"I was praying and doing things I felt was wrong, but I was still doing them."
He believes his actions were "not related to what happened" with the impeachment of Clinton.
"The president of the United States got in trouble for committing a felony in front of a sitting federal judge. ... (He) deliberately committed perjury, (which) is at the very heart of our legal system."
"If you don't tell the truth under oath, the whole system breaks down."
At the time, he thought "I'm not going to judge Bill Clinton as a person. ... I'm not going to cast the first stone and I clearly know I can't cast the first stone."
"I drew a line in my mind (that) ... even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed, as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law I have no choice except to move forward (with Clinton's impeachment) and say 'you cannot except felonies or perjury by highest government officials.' "

Hold on a sec. Gingrich says he didn't want to cast the first stone, but he was at the very front of the crowd ready to run the President out of Washington on a rail?
He approved of the actions investigating the President over an affair in office (when the investigation was supposed to be about Whitewater), at the same time he was having an affair himself? And all this hypocrisy was rolled up in a leader supported by "Focus on the Family"?
Just -- wow.

Oh man !
I can't really fault Bill for his tryst with Monica - I mean, married to Shrillary what do you expect?
I'd like to see some pictures or video or Newt's girl - I can't help but wonder how she'd stack up against Monica.

rock,
you must be new .......look closely "I was praying and doing things I felt was wrong, but I was still doing them."......do you see the word "praying", that's a religious word - so it qualifies the article as religion......i think ? :-)

You're right - it is a religion blog - so I'll do something religious. I'll take up an offering.

It's a faith and spirituality blog -- and all the trappings that come with it. Some would define that as morality, too. Some would include values. Some would include lifestyle changes. Religion and the things we take away from our religious beliefs, would encompass it all. How am I wrong?

There are at least a couple of things to see here. Hypocrisy happens. Jesus dealt with it constantly in his confrontations with the religious establishment of his day. It was Jesus' call for truth, as THE Truth, that got him nailed to the cross.
AND hypocrisy is endemic and ubiquitous. Rich and poor, you and me, black and white, theists and atheists, church members and non, Dems and Reps, clergy and laity – it’s all a matter of degree. It is one of the great challenges of the spiritual life to attain as high a degree of truth as possible.
Hypocrisy comes with the old sin nature. We want our existential cake and eat it too. The Dems have been in the hot seat of late for their own brand of hypocrisy: John, the populist, Edwards and his multi-million dollar plantation home in NC, and multiple offenders of the gospel of global warming.
I believe that this focus on honesty and real-ness regarding leaders and candidates is promulgated by God Himself, in answer to the prayers of many to rid this nation of corrupt leadership, of whatever party affiliation. It's great that character seems to be a major factor in who gets either party's nomination this time around. Juliani and Newt are OUT as far as I’m concerned. A party that at least claims to have some kind of alignment with Christian community had better screen its candidates for both major sins and hypocrisy. I say major sins (adultery, perjury, murder (of babies too), etc) because perfection is, of course, out of the question; but a high standard of personal virtue and honesty are key elements in reliable and trustworthy leadership. Clinton was justly condemned for his "tryst," and perjury - as also should anyone else. One tryst may not an impeachment make, but where there's smoke, there is almost always fire. If Juliani’s wives couldn’t trust his PROMISE to be faithful “till death us do part,” then how can we trust him to keep his word to uphold the Constitution. Character DOES count!
It also shows the folly of putting one's spiritual hopes in any political party basket. Christians most certainly should vote biblical, but MUCH more wisely and circumspectly. The world’s too hair-trigger dangerous to place impulsive, immoral, two-faced philanderers in office – which is precisely why we need to keep “In God We Trust” on our coinage. If we really ARE the captain of our own fate, then both our personal and national ship is sunk.

I fully agree, Nacny: ALL of life IS indeed inherently religous. Everything can be realted to some ultimate value or principle. Even atheists are religious in that their a- is dependent on there being a the- position. Everything is values-related. Even though your choices for subjects tend to be skewed toward "let's find as many flaws and errors in the Christian community as possible." (Maybe a hot line to moveon.org?) But that's your prerogative. It certainly gives opportunity to address these issues and debate them. My personal drothers are just that.
