'Who-gets-thrown-from-the-lifeboat questions '

Fascinating: CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) -- How do you get rid of the body of a dead astronaut on a three-year mission to Mars and back?

"There may come a time in which a significant risk of death has to be weighed against mission success," Wolpe said. "The idea that we will always choose a person's well-being over mission success, it sounds good, but it doesn't really turn out to be necessarily the way decisions always will be made."

He makes sense...

Priest 'recalled' before Sunday mass

"That was 25 years ago; don't you think he paid the price?" asked Brenda Roventini, who moved to the area from Washington a year ago.

I would ask: Are some mistakes insurmountable?

The only 'acceptable' prejudice left?

"The man said something like, 'You know, Mr. DeCoster is a Christian man and he can't have someone like you working for him.' "

This has never been an issue at any of the places I've worked -- or that I know of.

Nothing's simple these days

In case you missed it, the whole point of the conference was interfaith dialogue.

Is it surprising Christians would be against this?

Hearings began Tuesday for a bill that would permit federal punishment for individuals that perform "hate crimes" based on characteristics of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity.

The day also prompted numerous complaints from Christians who disagree with the federal "hate crimes" bill (HR 1592), arguing that it stifles free speech of religion. They are worried that, in the future, their freedom to express their religious beliefs will be interpreted as being "hateful" and thus open to legal consequences.

Good Bible knowledge

I wonder if he'd have passed had he instead recited from the Torah or the Qu'ran?

Swearing in the name of God?

RALEIGH (AP) _A court hearing Tuesday could determine if the Bible will remain the exclusive text used in North Carolina for swearing-in court witnesses or whether other religious texts will be allowed.

It's already coming to this

"As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don't worry about that; that's a temporary situation," the Rev. Al Sharpton said Monday during a debate with Hitchens at the New York Public Library's Beaux-Arts headquarters.

Romney himself said Monday during an appearance on Fox News program Hannity and Colmes: "I think there are differences between different faiths in this country. And there will be battles between different religions. ... That's a great thing about this country. We don't decide who's going to be in office based on what church they go to."

More than taking up space?

If it were not for worship hour traffic and parking spillage, how would you know that churches, synagogues, mosques or temples are in your neighborhood/your city?

Just a fun minute...

How much do you know about 'Superhero Spirituality?'

Falwell is dead

UPDATE: Because of technical problems, the link to the update on fundamental Baptist preacher Jerry Falwell's death never showed up yesterday. While many of you disagreed with some of Falwell's positions -- I did, too -- a lot of us growing up in church in the South also felt he spoke for us on some issues. Whether you loved him or reviled him, in my opinion he got some things right. Nancy.

The fundamental Baptist preacher was taken to the hospital after being found unconscious. He was just in the Greensboro area.

Should houses of worship help make divorce 'humane?'

This free six-week seminar for those considering divorce is sponsored by a group of churches — 'let no man put asunder' it is not. (Check out today's paper and tell me what you think.)

A surprising stat

WASHINGTON - One in four younger U.S. Muslims say suicide bombings to defend their religion are acceptable at least in some circumstances, says a Pew poll.

This is coming from a reputable polling source. Maybe the deaths in Iraq/the Middle East are fraying everyone's nerves? Could that be it?

Falwell's funeral

"But when told Falwell was with God, they rejoiced, at one point lifting their arms to the heavens and singing."

Who would you like to see take the lead?

"Although Falwell''s personal influence had been waning for years, his death at age 73 last week threw into stark relief the current headless state of the political movement he founded with the establishment of the Moral Majority in 1978.

"Headless does not mean weak. In the view of many social conservatives, their organizational structures -- from megachurches to Christian colleges, broadcasting networks and public interest law firms -- have never been stronger.

"It would be a mistake to draw the conclusion that because there is not one obvious or a few obvious leaders of this movement, that the movement is waning," said Mark DeMoss, president of an Atlanta-based public relations firm that works primarily for evangelical organizations."

School of thought

Faith, not deeds, is the only way to Heaven -- true or false?

Ask him, and he'll tell you about his God

"I want to be far more outspoken, but I know I can't because I'm a state employee and there's a separation between church and state; there's a fine line where one ends and the other begins, but there's no book to guide you in all situations."

Protesters held signs: This is not science

"For here at the $27 million Creation Museum...this pastoral scene is a glimpse of the world just after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, in which dinosaurs are still apparently as herbivorous as humans, and all are enjoying a little calm in the days after the fall.

"It also serves as a vivid introduction to the sheer weirdness and daring of this museum created by the Answers in Genesis ministry that combines displays of extraordinary nautilus shell fossils and biblical tableaus, celebrations of natural wonders and allusions to human sin. Evolution gets its continual comeuppance, while biblical revelations are treated as gospel."
