Is it surprising Christians would be against this?

Hearings began Tuesday for a bill that would permit federal punishment for individuals that perform "hate crimes" based on characteristics of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity.

The day also prompted numerous complaints from Christians who disagree with the federal "hate crimes" bill (HR 1592), arguing that it stifles free speech of religion. They are worried that, in the future, their freedom to express their religious beliefs will be interpreted as being "hateful" and thus open to legal consequences.

As the story you link to suggests, the reason many Christians oppose the bill is because, under its current wording, peaceful speech opposing something like homosexuality could be classified as a "hate crime."

The bill needs to be more specific about what constitutes a hate crime and make allowances for peacefully stating an opinion.

Somehow I doubt they'll be applying this to atheists. It's still okay to hate us.

There are already too many so-called "hate crime" laws on the books. A crime is a crime is a crime, and always "hateful." This whole thing is a thinly-veiled machination by the gay lobby to stifle, and ultimately eliminate, all critique of their wretched practices. All the other "categories" are a smoke screen.

It's simply a further extension of the radical left-wing inquisition. The neo-Marx are scurrying to ensconce their PC coercions into law, just in case the all-out, seek-and-destroy efforts of the lib media, the DNC, the Hollywood cesspool and the radical educational establishment fail to put their lackeys in office in the next general election. It's all quite transparent, even though they dress it up in PC lingo to fool the public. If it passes, it will just be another flush down the old cultural toilet.

It's surprising to me that true christians would be against passage of a hate crimes law against gays, lesbians and the transgendered. I mean, REAL christians are all about loving their neighbors, while fakes like Nikos who love to spout their " christianity" want to be free to hate and kill in the name of their Jesus.
Yeah, Nikos, your Jesus ABSOLUTELY hates the same people you do. Uh huh...

alice just for the record ...He's MY Jesus too !

i was wondering what makes alice an authority on Christianity ? it appears to me she is full of hostility towards nikos....apparently i've missed part of the show :-(

i can only find one thing that Jesus says He hates Rev. 2:15

Buz and Nikos: One need not be a bible expert to know that the Jesus you purport to follow gave as his greatest commandment :
" Love One Another as I Have Loved You."

That somehow doesn't comport with " It's okay to physically abuse or kill those with whom you do not like - or afraid you might be" ...

Alice, the love of God is conditional. Otherwise He would not have passed judgment on Israel and other nations/peoples across the centuries. The Scriptures teach, OT and NT, that God HATES sexual promiscuity and perversion - all sin in fact. It's only because of the Cross that He can accept any sinner - homosexual, racist, thief, gossiper, et al. All sin undermines the peasceable, blissful Kingdom of righeousness.

The hate crimes bill is an attempt to do an end run around God's judgments against perversion. Even if our judicial or legislative system fully approves and legalizes perversion, they can never stop God's absolute and inevitable judgment upon it. This is why John 3:16 is so marvelous: God interposes the life of the eternal Son, and his blood of atonement, so that all who beleive and trust the Gospel can avoid divine judgment. "God so loved the world" that He provided the atonement necessary to assuage His just wrath. We will be making a horrendous mistake as a nation if we make perversions legal and acceptable, whether in this bill, or any other instrument of government. "Be not deceived, God is not mocked . . ."

I never knew your poor God was only capable of conditional love. That's a far cry from " God is Love" and The Greatest Commandment, which WASN'T " Love one another even though I'm incapable of doing it ".

" So you know they are Christians by their hate, by their hate
yes you'll know that they are Christians by their hate."

No Alice. I was siimply stating what the Scriptures evidence from beginning to end. God is NOT JUST love; He is also holiness (no evil or sinfulness), light, justice and truth - which necessitates His judgment on sin (anti-life acts, contrary to His created model). That's ALL I was saying.

God's unconditional love (a la John 3:16) is only available to man because of the Cross (provisionally in the OT sacrifices and covenant), where human sin and guilt were judged and atoned for; so that ALL who repent and receive it may forever be under the unconditional love of grace, which was provided in the Atonement.

In the OT, the Israelites, even though God's covenant people, and much loved by Him, were severely chastized for their apostasy and disobedience to the Law and Covenant. So, even though God's mercy is extended to sinners, His justice must judge and reprimand, even as a parent HAS to discipline disobedient children; not because the parent hates the child, but precisely because he loves the child. To allow children to grow up disrespectful, and doing whatever they wish, is to in effect hate the child. (Prov. 13.24)

If homosexuals, adulterers, racists, or murderers , et al., persist in their sins they simply - place THEMSELVES under the judgment of God. Since they identify with their sin and rebellion, they, as responsible beings, become the objects of God's wrath against sin. Hitler so identified himself with this horendous sins that HE HIMSELF was identified as one who must pay for his crimes against humanity. IF he hadn't died beforehand, he most certainly would have been justly hanged.

When GOd's wrath was to come upon a rebellious Israel in Joshua 24.15, Joshua identified with the Lord, saying,:

"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

So you see, God's love(or better, favor/ acceptance) is conditional upon our obedience to His Law/Word. It was only His divine love that provided a covering for our sin-guilt on the Cross, without which we would all be "objects of wrath" destined for the just punishment our practice of, and identity with, sin deserves. It is said that justice and mercy met at the Cross.

To expect God to love (accept, approve) those who reject His Word and practice sin is utterly alien to Scripture and contrary to reason.
