Tammy Faye Messner
It's Mike again, filling in for Nancy while she's gone (she'll be back Thursday).
Whether Tammy Faye Messner's death warranted a separate editorial is discussed at the new Your Voice at the Table blog.
Doug Clark writes: "Interesting as that story was, the four of us attending today's meeting -- Allen Johnson, Ken Irons, Keith Monroe and your reporter -- didn't think T.F.'s death warrants a separate editorial. Were we right or wrong?"

That story wasn't any more interesting than any other cancer story. Tammy Faye stopped being interesting in any way the moment she divorced Bakker. She wasn't much interesting before that either, except for being the butt of make-up based jokes... and some of the more stupid things she said while on camera with her husband.

Despite being involved in sleazy televanglism, TF certainly seemed to be a sweet person. Besides, our Good Christian Friend, the Reverend Fred Phelps says she's in hell, and plans to picket and disrupt her funeral, so somebody's gotta stand up for her.

"Tammy Faye is in Hell!
WBC will preach at the memorial service of the adulterous Tammy Faye Bakker Messner, who spent her entire life prophesying lies and false doctrines like "God loves everyone".
There is little doubt that Tammy split Hell wide open the instant she died. The evidence is compelling, overwhelming, and irrefragable. To wit:
1. She sloughed the husband of her youth to shack up with criminal fraudster Roe Messner and live out her days as an adulteress.
2. Tammy Faye rejected the plain preaching of God on the matter of adultery by sending a blasphemous letter to WBC blasting the doctrines of the Bible we warned her she was violating.
3. Tammy Faye is famous for "bridging the gap" between *** (name-calling) and so-called christians in this country, with her pagan doctrine of "God loves everyone". She defied God in life, and will suffer His judgment in death."

Well, that's just great! Go to heaven, get Fred Phelps as a next-door neighbor; go to hell, and you'll eventually run across Tammy Faye. Catch-22.

Although TV has been a valuable tool in communicating the Gospel to America and the world, it has also done great harm to the cause of Christ: to wit: Bakker’s PTL Club, Jimmy Swaggart, and several others. Putting doctrinally-deficient, emotions-based tyoes on TV is like putting foxes in hen houses – trouble must ensue. The charismatic get-your-miracle-for-a-hefty-donation trap, big production techniques, and ludicrous stage-strutting nonsense has seriously damaged the credibility of genuine Christianity. It is glitzy “religious” emotionalism that bears little resemblance to the humility and sacrificial teachings of Jesus and the full-orbed doctrine of the Apostles.
Tammy Faye was a sad victim of the high-powered media phenomenon. I saw some footage of the Bakkers’ original children’s’ program a long time ago. I think it was, or involved a puppet show. It seemed OK. If only they had stayed in that mode and never went “big time,” perhaps they wouldn’t have gone astray. The media thing has corrupted human behavior across the board; and some religious types have not been immune to its siren call.
Like many others today, I had my stint in the charismatic movement, but eventually saw the doctrinal deficiencies inherent in its theology and praxis. It has some good aspects to it, but it just has this fatal flaw, based on the error of tongue-speaking, which unleashes all the bizarre emotional behavior so characteristic of both TV and local expressions.
Tammy Faye is one of the more tragic and extreme victims of the TV phenomenon. Apparently neither Jim nor she had the capacity to handle the big money and fame that TV affords. Charismania and TV were a lethal combination that hurt, deceived and eventually ruined a sincere, but naďve young woman. I would never presume to consign any professing Christian to hell, but she certainly has her share to answer for. But so do all of us. Only God is the just Judge of all the world. Sure is great we have a merciful God, who looks not at Christians’ short comings and sins, but at the atoning blood of Messiah. But for the grace of God . . .
But atheists and non-Christians have a feeding frenzy when Christians falter and fail – especially in the national media spotlight. Again, I lament this greatly, and pray that God will redeem TV ministries from their errors and deviations. There’s SOME really good stuff though on radio, which is of course, a hot medium that can convey positive content. It seems the visual element can make TV a corrupter of vulnerable and naďve aspirants.

"But atheists and non-Christians have a feeding frenzy when Christians falter and fail – especially in the national media spotlight."
True enough. One wonders why they never seem to learn their lesson and avoid that spotlight. It's a rare person who can stay there and not falter.

You have a point, Eric.

isn't it wonderful that f.phelps will not be the judge on that day ! he is so busy pointing his finger and wagging his tonque towards everyone else (usually those who claim salvation)that he rarely has time to inventory his own life. the false assumption by so many is that once someone professes belief in Christ, that instantly they ought to become 'goodie two shoes' and their life should immediately reflect all that God expects from His people. i prefer to see my life under grace more as an empty canvas, which is being painted upon daily and at the completion of this painting - that it portrays a life of change (metamorphoo) - somewhat like the process of the worm turning into the butterfly. if you ask me if i'm perfect since i accepted Christ and i will say 'yes' - but it is He that is within me that has perfected me. in this body of flesh i am just as subseptible to making bad choices and judgements as the next person - albeit if i do make a bad choice and repent/confess God is faithful to forgive. anyone who has know me for the past 39 years (since i was saved) would says they has seen a positive change in my life - i am in the race and wanting to win, i press on simply trusting God to sustain all my needs. i don't judge tammy and by Gods grace may her name be found to be written in the book of life.

eric, I LOVE the "catch 22" statement!
Buz, I agree wholeheartedly! In the post above; You speak my mind!
I feel no further comments need be made about the Bakker's, and other tele-eveangelists.
I will note however, that one "tv preacher" who has been in the spotlight for some approximately 60 years and has NO known blights; Rev. Billy Graham. If only those other guys would take a page from Billy's book!
Shalom

i knew a little about tammy faye as i saw her on the surreal life. and upon observation i noticed she was a strong believer in christ. i grew to love that about her and it is sad to know that she has succumbed to cancer. but you know what folks, in the caribbean old folks says that in a lifetime the good ones go first. This means that people like tammy leaves a world filled with heinous crimes and go to a place that is worthy of their being.
