Seems clear it's government property

"While a deputy was searching M. Reza Salami's car at a sobriety checkpoint last Saturday, the deputy asked Salami to wait in the back of his patrol car, Salami said.
There, Salami, a professor at N.C. A&T, saw a sign reading "Jesus is your savior" between the front and back seats."

The sheriff says that his department has no policy regarding personal property that his employees keep in their cars, and this is why the sign was in the car. It was the deputy's personal property. I should think that at least in the case of this situation, where his employees are directly interfacing with the public, and are acting as the embodiment of the laws of the state, a policy is needed.

What if the deputy had chosen to carry a sign that said "Satan is your Lord"? Would the sheriff have felt as inclined to say "it's none of my business, and this person should get over it"? Somehow, I have the impression that Barnes would be falling over himself in his efforts to quell the trouble, and he'd be looking for a way to get the deputy off the streets if not out of the force. Someone ought to ask him about that, see what he thinks.

I would hope that he would not entertain the classic double-standard regarding religious expression. But somehow, I think he would fail that test.

Ms.McLaughlin, maybe instead of religion, you need to write something else. Hell I pay taxes and would like to see more of this. If it had been bomb America, you liberals would never say a word. I hate seeing people sit on their ass, and living off of me, that does not seem to liberals. You only gripe when tax payers money is not used to advance your liberal agenda. Not let me really p you off, MERRY CHRISTMAS, I know you liberals hate this.

the easiest solution would be to blindfold anyone placed in the back seat of a police car .......or have an electronic display with a selection the perp can choose from....case solved eveyone is happy !

Doug, you assume I'm a liberal. I'm just saying that's the law. Personally, I say give our law enforcement officers whatever they need to do the job they need to do -- without trampling on anybody's rights.

If this was the deputy's personal property, he should have kept it in the front with his stuff. Back seat of police vehicles is for those detained or under arrest- meaning they're NOT free to leave. This deputy was preaching to a " captive audience".

And to Doug, who jumped all over Nancy, " libruls" and everybody else- Take your meds, son. You've obviously missed more than a few doses.
