i guess this proves that God control asteroids ! i suppose this scenario is possible - for surely God can use any vehicle He choose for either blessing or destruction, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility than an asteroid destroyed sodom/gomorrah. God uses nature as His servant to accomplish His purpose, whether blessing or punishment. let's consider how He used the flood - He used plagues against the Egyptians - He used the red sea against pharaohs chariots - He used hail many times - He used locusts, hornets and etc.,etc.
nature even gives praise to God "Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; Let the sea roar, and all it contains; Let the field exult, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy Before the Lord, for He is coming; For He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, And the peoples in His faithfulness".
so for those who would take the opportunity to use this "scientific" discovery as proof of Gods non existence - quite the contrary is true.
