'Green' faith
In what ways are your house of worship -- or nonfaith -- group paying attention to the environment?
"When people realize that there is this direct tie between our own faith and being good stewards of this Earth," said John Wear, founding director of Catawba College's Center for the Environment, "then it gives them a purpose that didn't exist before."

My place of worship is careful of water usage, heating and air conditioning costs and our "footprint." The latter being a mandate from the city (GSO). However, until being notified by the city, we were unaware that our footprint was too large. Resolutions were made and things have improved.
We also recycle totally. Our garbage throw away is less than our recycling. Sadly, GSO has gone to bi-monthly recycling pick-up. This can get troublesome for a place of worship with a weekly recycling need!
Shalom

My place of worship is working to become recognized by our national association as a Green Sanctuary. We have a recycling program in place and have undertaken an energy audit. We have added a special type of run off retention pond (I can't recall the proper name for the system) that does not just hold the water but actually filters it back into the ground water system. Our Green Committee is working on other projects as well.

We should be good stewards of the earth, and our income, etc. This is based on the idea that all things come from God. Where I think environmentalist go astray is that they make the earth their "god" instead. I think it is fair to say that those on the left have made what they consider the well-being of the planet the focal point of their existence. They have, in this way, created an idol.
Moreover, the evidence is that environmentalist are full-speed ahead regardless of the facts. Look at the ethanol issue. It takes more energy to create a gallon of ethanol than the gallon of ethanol produces. Given the ethanol craze, we now have every farmer who is able turning their farm from things like rice, wheat or soybeans to corn. What this does, as we know, is push up the price of everything because corn is being diverted (ineffeciently) to produce ethanol, and all the other crop land is being diverted to corn. Yet another example of unanticipated consequences. It reminds me of the alar hoax of twenty-five years ago.
Finally, it is clear that so-called environmentalists are not the least bit interested in becoming energy independent if that means drilling for more oil or going to nuclear (or as GWB would say, "nucular") power. This is a political movement with little relation to the facts. For more on this see the latest forecasts that say the earth will be cooling for the next ten years, instead of getting hotter as the doomsayers have predicted. This cooling trend will take place naturally, and despite increasing CO2 levels.

"they make the earth their "god"..........in this way, created an idol"...............
good point antonio. as a Christian i am 'for' being a good steward - realizing that God is provider of all things and whatever we have is simply 'on loan' to us and we ought to return it as good (preferably better) than received. however, as you pointed out, too many focus on earth instead of glorifying God who created the it!

Oxymoron: "green" faith.
Faith is clearly defined in the Scriptures, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the modern environmentalist idolatry so well described by Antonio. Biblical faith is focused entirely on God and His Gospel/Word.
Of course, we are all FOR sane, balanced and responsible care of the environment - as opposed to Earth-Mother enviro-paganism, which does NOT in any way make one more spiritual or acceptable to God – only the atoning blood of Yeshua does that
I think liberal churches that are all hot and bothered about the extreme environmentalist agenda have too much time on their hands, and are just looking for something to fill the doctrinal void – attempting to FEEL spiritual, even as they deny the central points of the orthodox biblical Faith - including the Gospel of grace - without which, all “religious” action is utter vanity, no matter if Papa Gore pronounces an Earth Day blessing upon it.
