What? He's not PROUD of every hateful, small-minded, pathetic thing he's uttered in front of his church over the years? Color me astounded! :)

Bob said:

I still see videos of him on YouTube. He couldn't have gotten them all.

Hagee is typical of these independent media-created megachurch preachers, in that they have no real accountability - that is, to bishops, a presbytery, superintendents, etc. They become, through the power of the media, their own little magisterium, even "papal" in their status. The sad thing is that many are ill-prepared to be in such a position. They say and do things that are non-scriptural and erroneous, not to mention embarrassing. And worst of all, they are parading some of their theological errors through the public arena: dispensationalism, for example, and its preoccupation with the "rapture," the antichrist, and the ascendancy of Israel during the supposed tribulation period, which is the basis for Hagee’s pro-Israel mania. But at least they are generally orthodox in their essential theology, as opposed to the Marxist liberationism of Jeremiah Wright and company.

All the theological positions mentioned above are rooted in erroneous exegesis and interpretation; which proves just how important balanced and informed exegesis is to the health and well being of the Church and society. Sound, orthodox, and Reformed theology, coupled with the illumination of the Holy Spirit, comes as close as mere mortals can to a true understanding of God’s Word and will, IMO. I would dearly love to have the keen minds of more able conservative thinkers at the forefront of the current debates; but alas, the media circus wants the big shew rather than truth with humility, and devotion to accuracy.

yeah, I believe he not the freak who preached that God sent Hitler to be a Hunter so allathem Jeezus-disbelievin Jooooz who Hitler did not kill would pack up their yarmulkes and dreidels and other Joo-things and move to Israel.
Yeah, I suppse that IS orthodox theology. At least to the nutter -christer , tinfoil -hat - wearing oops- oh, hi
Nikos! segment of the population.

namtac, I agree wholeheartedly!

Nikos, you had me till the second paragraph. Then I recall that the theological presuppositions of some are the superior ones over others!

Hagee is a religious right wing-nut! Sadly, far too many Christian people are duped by the likes of him. This is a case of "The blind leading the blind." How sad.

Alice, this was one of your most vacuous and incomprehensible efforts so far – not to mention poorly written. Rather than come up with tenable ideas, you seek to dismiss and demean your opposition with chintzy put-downs and spiteful nonsense. Somehow I think you can do better than this, but choose to take the low road, for whatever reasons.

Darryl, please explain what you’re getting at in YOUR second paragraph. It is unclear. Are you saying that there is no correct interpretation or exegesis? - that God simply allows us to read into scripture what we will, and decipher his divine Word ad libitum? I think not. Even the Word, correctly interpreted, will inevitably offend the humanistic mindset; so acceptance is no criteria for “rightly dividing the word of truth.” But, since the Word of the living God is the true measure of all things, ideas, principles, morals and spirituality, it MUST be approached with much fear and trembling.

I’ve heard Hagee, Parsley and Jakes say some good, scriptural things – as well as some wrong, poorly-exegeted things as well. They’re a mixed bag with holes it; primarily because of their charismatic and dispensational errors. Even so, I will defend them, in terms of orthodoxy, against liberal apostates like John Spong, and Marxist demagogues like Jeremiah Wright. At least Wright seems to care about poor and disenfranchised people, even though his theology is abysmal. Spong is just a bitter atheistic imposter, dressed in deceptive clerical trappings.

Even so, I shutter and moan when listening to the big TV preachers at times. Theirs is not a problem of disbelieving core Christian theology, or trashing the scriptures wholesale, but of misinterpretation, emotionalism and TV-itis. O for the likes of Chrysostom, Augustine, Calvin and Van Til. Half the problem is just the tele-medium itself, amplifying any errors or interpretive failures to an extent they would never have been in previous ages. The penchant for show and glitz also seems to preempt any serious and responsible interpretation. The worst by-product of it is that it gives excessive fodder to the radical religious and atheistic left, which has few if any scriptural convictions, and will lead us into the cesspool of spiritual darkness – as it is already doing. So, I guess I’ll just have to put up with the theological shortcomings and emotionalism of the TV moguls until better times arrive – which will be a long time if the left-wing “messiah” wins in November.

So Nikos, the concept of Hitler as a Hunter for God, murdering all them Jooz in order to chase the rest back to their biblically promised land
of Israel IS what your bible preaches too?

Alice, has it not been learned yet that Nikos does not play well with others?

Nikos, I live it to thee to figure out my second paragraph above.

There is little entertainment better than watching Jimmy Swaggert or John Hagee
or Ernest Angley.
One of my co-workers does impersonations
of these three and it is an absolute riot.
These kind of nuts are always good for a
few laughs.

Nikos said:

Now Ernest Angley is a real nut-case, I must say. And roving Jimmy loves a good made-for-TV cry. But Hagee, he's not really humorous.

But for me, as a conservative Reformed believer, it WOULD be funny, if it weren't so grievous to my soul. The Lord Jesus deserves better than TV-inanity. as I've noted before, TV seems to draw out the lesser lights of all sorts - with a few notable exceptions.

It's kind of interesting how, in blog after blog, you all keep coming back for more abuse from each other.
I read a book in college (it was in French and
for the life of me I can't remember the author)
about a group of people who were trapped in a room
with no way out and they couldn't stand each other.
It turns out they were in hell. I may not be remembering that quite correctly--long time ago--but you get the gist. And please, no preaching about hell-the book was metaphorical. Well, anyway, I think you all rather enjoy this constant bickering--and that makes for some funny reading sometimes.

Nikos said:

Glad we can indulge your above-the-fray humor-lust. But, it's not just about "bickering" - there are very real and polar arguments being set forth; generally between biblical Christianity and atheistic Humanism. That there would be conflicting views and arguments should neither be surprising or particularly humnorous, considering the consequences in people's lives. This is probably the most substantive and vital blog around - on these particular issues.

I get a picture of Zeus looking down on poor striving mortals, knowingly smiling in his divine detachment. But I must agree with you that this blog is certainly not heaven. As for the alterantive - at times perhaps. (chuckling sounds).

My concern is not Hagee, et al. but the way the GOP cozies up to such men.

As for Sartre's "Huis Clos/No Exit": Happily, we have the choice to shut off the computer. The true hellish experience is lived by those in places like Darfur, etc. The struggle in the US is political, social, at times infuriating, but not on the scale of many places. Sartre actually reads as a classist these days compared to Camus, and his wife de Beauvoir. His brand of hell was distinctly Freeench. The American version I enjoy was set out by the humorist Sam Clemens. Or try the Irishman who wrote in French, Sam Beckett.
