Not according to this jury. The Osteens thanked Jesus for the verdict.

And of course, the fact that facts, logic and reason were used in the court had absolutely nothing to do with the way things turned out. :?

Namtac, I suppose you're insinuating that saying "Thank You, Jesus" is just a superstitious religious response, and that all that took place was mere courtroom logic and reasoning, devoid of any supernatural assistance. I will certainly admit that such phrases CAN become rote and shallow at times. But, in this case, I would think it was a very heartfelt prayer of relief.

The idea is that God works in and through the circumstances of life, often beyond our human comprehension; that prayer is a cooperative, relational dynamic between a regenerate believer and his heavenly Lord, Who is said to be “a very present help in time of trouble.” The Scriptures are replete with examples of God’s acting in response to the prayers of his saints, OT and NT. Then there are the testimonies of believers now and across the centuries. It is not, of course, that God is our celestial bellhop, doing exactly what we demand. Rather, He answers prayer regarding outward circumstances in His own sovereign way; but ALWAYS grants us grace and peace to accept whatever He allows or causes to happen (Jesus on the cross; Paul in his persecutions and tortures). Faith is not demanding of God, but resting in whatever He decrees, a la Romans 8:28.

It was therefore altogether fitting and proper that Victoria thank God for whatever sovereign assistance He provided behind the scenes of earthly justice. God is said to turn the hearts of kings and other potentates in the OT. And Paul is often aware that God moved in the hearts and minds of those who could have killed him or provided a way of escape.

God is the author of justice, and the Provider of all aspects of our American system of justice, from whatever contingent human sources they were gleaned: Bible, Roman Law, etc. Thanksgiving is simply an acknowledgement of God’s presence and faithful providence. Your criticism appears rather snide and cynical to me in comparison.

– “in all things giving thanks.”

This not "religious" news. Very little on this blog is.

I agree, J.W. Some of these subject lines are a real stretch, having more in common with the National Enquirer. The popular, newsy entries do at times stimulate lively "theological" discussion; but I'm sure this blogsite is not intended as a seminary-level think tank.

I believe der blogmeister does a good job overall, but the quality and level of the subjects could DEFINITELY use some improvement toward the high end - as opposed to the "let's find all the trashy, negative stuff about Christianity" threads.

Good point.
