Does it not at least "feel" suspicious when someone wants to sell one of these?

You know, even with an open door policy, you'd think a church would exercise some common sense with valuables. This is not to defend the guy who took the bells, but seriously, you can't expect people to all respect church property. At least, this seems to be an assumption that they made.
