Anybody else curious as to how, virtually overnight, ecofaith has become the new public piety, an inoffensive way to get moral brownie points among the politically correct? Even children's cartoons preach the recycling gospel. Bookstores have green displays and publishers put out eco-friendly editions. It's almost as if a group of ex-hippies who now run the various media got together, asked each other what the newest orthodoxy was going to be, and decided it would be "save the planet." The predictable crowd of celebrities have of course jumped on the bandwagon, and the more zealous are aggressively promoting measures to end greenhouse gas emissions by dismantling the world economy (oops; the banks beat them to it) and returning us to the good old days of -- what? The oxcart? No carbon emissions there, except when the ox has indigestion.
I'm not really that paranoid (on my good days), but it is odd.
