Update on Greensboro recycling efforts
I recently posted on Greensboro's efforts to increase recycling rates, particularly among residential customers, while saving the city money. Here are budget (2007-08 and 2008-09) and contract documents I requested from the city regarding the recycling program. You can see from this table that recycling rates among residences are slightly up, while down in the commercial sector.

Interesting to see this info. In general, collection rates are down or stagnant. Do we know how many new residents or commercial businesses opened in these years. I would expect an increase which should be seen in the table, but maybe there is a reason for that.
Most interesting to me, and disappointing, at the same time is that under the goals and objectives there is no mention of trying to increase participation in recycling - only to meet current needs and to be efficient.

There's something the city isn't telling you. Why? Because they simply have no means of tracking the info they need to make the numbers complete. You see, while local businesses may not be using the city managed recycling services they are recycling more than ever before. And the commercial sector is getting paid for their recyclables.
Let me see here, should I toss it in the brown can to be picked-up by the City and give away my valuable recyclables or should I SELL my recyclables to Salvage America?
If you owned a Greensboro business which would you do?
