But there's nothing to DO there!
OK, we have a request to discuss the merits of entertainment in north High Point and Jamestown.
Let's see...we've got the Palladium Cinemas. It's a good theater. I just wish it offered more independent and art films. There's live music at J. Butler's and JP Looney's. And maybe other places as well...I just know about those clubs.
But wait a second...
We HAD a comedy club, but it shut down due to lack of business. I'm not sure what that means. If we're so starved for entertainment, why didn't folks flock to the Funny Bone?
Anywho...When you're not leaving them to go to Greensboro, Winston and the Triangle, what do you do for fun in north High Point and Jamestown? Where are the hidden treasures. ARE there any hidden treasures?

AHHH, THE MOST REFRESHING THING TO DO IN NORTH HIGH POINT IS TO TAKE A DRIVE DOWN BARROW ROAD, WILLIARD DAIRY ROAD OR SOUTHWEST SCHOOLS ROAD.
THE SCENERY IS SIMPLY BREATHTAKING. IT'S ESPECIALLY WONDERFUL ON A SUNNY DAY. JUST DRIVING AROUND AND SEEING THE SUN GLIMMER OFF ALL THE "SAVE OUR SCHOOLS" AND "GET TERRY GRIER OUTTA HERE" SIGNS.
JUST DRIVE AROUND AND DREAM...
YEP, THE BEST PAST-TIME IN THESE PARTS. EVERYONE DOES IT.

For your information there is still a comedy club in High Point. It is actually a road troupe that comes to HP once a quarter and makes an appearance on English Road. Normally it just stays on Eugene Street in GSO.
Plus if you are bored you can wander out to the intersection of Wendover & Penny Road and count the number of cars that still have "Get Terry Grier Outta Here" magnets on them.
I think the reason that Mr. Yohn's establishment failed is that the citizens of North High Point and Jamestown were already getting comedians with their tax dollars, why go to a private establishment and pay for something that you can already get for free (so to speak).

Oh, BuckMtn, that's my favorite thing to do is to go to Harris Teeters and count the gtgoh magnets. Just yesterday I counted 10 and some even had more than one magnet on their car. How's that for entertainment!

10 at a Harris Teeter?? About the only place you'll see more is the teacher's parking lot at any of the schools in HP or GSO.

THe kids like to come out and have fun. At Halloween they all dress up like their favorite School Board character. We give prizes for the most creative.
During the other times of the year they play School Board charades. One little blonde haired girl makes her eyes as big as saucers. Then she hits her head with her hand and makes a dumb face. She is so cute.
The kids also like to play School Bus. They bring out all their wagons in the cul-de-sac and load kids in them. Each kid has a lottery number first and they call out numberss. Then they all pile in and we time who can get to the furthest yard the fastest. They divide the kids by who has the biggest allowance and who has the least amount of money and mix them up on the bus first.
Another really great time is Lt. Gen. Slak lets all the kids play soldier. They all wear their red, white and blue colors and put streamers and flags on their bikes. They tie SOS signs on their wagons and put their little brothers and sisters in the wagons. This would be perfect for your child to come over and play.
The girls also play Cheerleader and make up cheers about the school system.
It is tons of fun.

Another "hidden treasure" in "North High Point/Jamestown" is BABCI's ice-cream parlor. FANTASTIC soft-serve ice-cream. They are near Carter Brothers--ANOTHER fine establishment.
Kudos to BOTH of these places for being the home of the FIRST "Git Terry Grier Outta Here" foodfests. Babci's also displayed the famous plastic "GTGOH" sign in their window the ENTIRE summer last year. I believe that you can still purchase magnets there.
There's nothing better than lickin' your cone in the hot sun while lookin' at the words "Grier" and "Outta here" at the same time!
God I love "North High Point/Jamestown". Such a small town feeling despite the School's Mass Transit system.

A game my family likes to play is "Spot the AP Student". It's just a little something we learned from Terry Grier. We sit by the side of the road and as the cars drive by, we can look at the driver and guess whether or not they might have ever taken an AP class. I never knew you could play this game but Terry showed us a little trick and now we can get it right every time.

I forgot about those warm summer nights at Babci's.
Another Hidden Treasure is the famous magnet swaps. You can trade an "Outta here" magnet for a "Dot Kearns" magnet. Also you can buy an assortment of bumper stickers. There is the magnet auction for the hottest magnet once a month. The winner gets a banana split from the magnet fund.
One of the ladies designs fashions out of yellow and black plastic covers. You would be surprised how many uses there are for those plastic signs. She has a designer line on E-bay now. The biggest seller is her plastic table cloth made out of several plastic signs. Great for summer cookouts.
So much fun in North High Point. Y'all come up now. Ya hear.

Easter is my favorite time of the year in N High Point. Talk about a hidden treasure!
We put a bunch of jelly beans in a jar. Only certain colors are used. They represent all the different kinds of children who will be put in the mix for the bussing trips to different schools. Each person adds a certain number of beans to the jar. The total number of jelly beans represents the number of children in the lottery for that year. The person who is the closest guesser gets to be the Easter bunny.
It is the Easter bunny's job to deliver SOS signs to all his friends' yards in North High Point and Jamestown. We decorate the signs with colored egg balloons so they will look festive.
We have the annual running of the bunnies. Only families with a "for sale" sign in their yard participate in this activity. They each have to run or hop to the finish line. The winner gets his moving expenses paid by the Homeowners Association to move out of the High Point district.
It is fun all year round in North High Point.

North High Pointers and Jamestowners,
GET READY! It's almost here, the 2nd annual Cinco de Mayo celebration!
Remember LAST year? How that ladder ended up where it did is beyond me! I know where I'd like it to be shoved this year!
The BEST was when that pilot agreed to sky-write "SAVE OUR SCHOOLS: BUS TERRY GRIER" even after so many margaritas!
CAN'T WAIT!
I cannot host it this year, my insurance company said they'd drop me if I had another party like that again.
Any takers?

The reason the Funny Bone failed was that their food sucked. They had a good thing going, at a reasonable price, especially with their non-smoking nights. The problem was that the food they offered tasted like it came right out of the Pop Shoppe's freezer section. All of it, from appetizers to entrees, tasted frozen, processed, and terrible.
Incidentally, now that Ham's is moving out to the Palladium, has there been any mention of Lubrano's expanding and taking over that space?
Posted by: balzigore at April 27, 2005 8:11 PM
Speaking of Lubrano's, they were one of the first businesses to have a NO SCHOOL LOTTERY sticker in their window. Love their food.
to Partypooper. No can do on Cinco de Mayo this year. We need a new place. The crowd will be bigger. We are getting a great discount on the specially ordered pinadas this year. What can we fill them with? They are out of the mini magnets.
Maybe we will invite Justin to bring the margueritas.
Posted by: Peggy Sue at April 27, 2005 11:51 PM
Hey everybody, Justin is right, this sight is for things to do.
We were all going to get together after Furniture Market and before school is out.
Where to we want to go???? And once that is decided is it still going to be a theme-party where you dress as your favorite School Board member or Administrator???
Posted by: Buckmtn at April 29, 2005 2:46 PM
Buckmtn,
All those masks were put up for storage after Halloween. There may still be some left of the masks on a stick that you know who had at election time. She can bring those.
