Ward 6 seat will likely remain vacant for now

Hopefully you caught the story inside Saturday's paper about the vacant Ward 6 seat, which represents northeast High Point. The post was vacated by Owen Strickland, who announced his resignation last month after buying a house in Randolph County. He had previously said he wouldn't seek reelection.

I can't find a link to Saturday's story, but here's a one-sentence summary: the seat will likely stay vacant until November's election. Council members don't want to appoint either of the two candidates for the position to council now for fear of giving that person an unfair advantage.

Some council members are willing to appoint someone with council experience to the seat as a temporary fill-in, but no one seems to know if such a person exists in Ward 6.

For a quick look at the candidates in Ward 6 and other city races, click here.

There will be lots more written about the candidates in the coming weeks and months. So if you have an issue you want the candidates to address, post it here or send me an e-mail.

Added neighborhood patrols?!?

Someone posted a comment to my blog item about leaving the News & Record for Southwest High School. In it, he or she makes reference to added neighborhood patrols on the day school starts.

I'm not sure if that's a joke or if it's true. And I'm not sure if he or she is talking about extra patrols in north High Point or elsewhere. I know I haven't heard anything about them in my neighborhood.

If anyone knows anything about these extra patrols--including if there are plans for them--please contact me. I find it hard to believe anyone really thinks we need to beef us security in north High Point, but if there are concerns, we'd like to know.
