FedEx noise

For those of you who've been following the FedEx noise mitigation study, I hope you didn't miss this in Friday's paper. It didn't make the web, so I'll put it up here.

FedEx noise study to be delayed

The final draft of a noise mitigation study on the future FedEx hub will be delayed by six weeks so consultants can have more time to finish it.
The study was to be presented to the public in early December.
“We realized we had more to get done than we had time to do it in,” said Andrew S. Harris, the lead consultant on the noise study.
The document should be ready by Jan. 24, when three committees formed to help with the study will review it. The study will then be sent to the Federal Aviation Administration for approval.
The $1.3 million study began in June 2004 and is intended to address noise problems before the $516 million FedEx hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport opens in 2009. The hub is expected to handle as many as 63 takeoffs and 63 landings a day at the airport.
Early drafts of the study have addressed such issues as flight paths, home soundproofing and which corridors planes use when they fly over the region.
Harris said the delay is needed to answer several questions raised by committee members and to update maps and complete the report’s recommendations.

Now come on AA, keep it clean.

And I know your primary concern is the school plan, but there are folks who are plenty darned worried about the noise those FedEx planes are going to bring when they fly over North High Point.

Where are the posters who are concerned about the noise of Fed Ex? I do not see any here.

Wow, how short everyone's memories are. In the summer of 2003, Lee Burnett announced his plans to rezone Nottingham and the developments on Skeet Club Road as Mixed Use Industrial, so he could build an industrial park over the top of our houses to serve the new Fed Ex hub. One of the first steps to doing this was Mr. Burnett commissioning a study to declare living in North High Point detrimental and requiring all of us to issue warnings to any prospective buyers. Why? To drive the prices the industrial developers would have to pay for our houses. Due to an outpouring of citizen response, the city council voted to move those boundaries back closer to the airport. If I remember correctly, and I'm pretty hazy about her actual role, Mayor Smothers was in favor of Lee Burnett's plan, as it would 'bring jobs'. Yeah, well, opening legalized bordellos and casinos would 'bring jobs' too, but I don't think anybody is suggesting that. In light of the recent Kelo v. New London decision, that states City Councils have the right to seize homes to distribute to another private entity (like Fed Ex or a 3rd party shipping company) don't be surprised to see Lee Burnett get his way after all.

I'm opposed to the school choice plan, but it is far from the only issue facing High Point. If you really want Don Terry Grier, head of the local crime family to go back to New Jersey and head the Sopranos again (and leave us alone), get your friends to the voting booths when the school board elections come around. In the meantime, while Fed Ex may be a good thing, High Point's decision to rezone North High Point as an industrial staging ground for the Fed Ex hub most certainly isn't. Closing your eyes to all that not so distant history doesn't change anything.
