North High Point impressions
A while back I said I'd share my impressions of north High Point as I discover it. Of course I made the mistake of not realizing how quickly that post would devolve, thanks to the name of the establishment, into a discussion of the superintendent-who-shall-not-be-named.
Well, I'm ready to try again.
My significant other and I are guilty of the whole dinner-and-a-movie routine, which means we've checked out quite a few of the restaurants near the Palladium. Unfortunately most of them are chains, and well, I don't want to comment on them since they're generally the same everywhere. But we have checked out a few local places.
The best meal I've had in High Point came courtesy of Aquaria. It's a little more than my budget can handle too often, but made for a nice place to visit on a special occasion. I also really liked the Indian Restuarant at the intersection of Gordon Place and Eastchester, across from Panera. So far, those are my two favorite "local" places.
Not counting the political commentary near the high school, I'm not finding much enterainment in north High Point. The Palladium's a good place to see a movie, but beyond that, I've found myself scooting up to Greensboro more and more.
Tell me what I'm missing north High Pointers! What's the best way (aside from setting up Christmas displays on Southwest School Road) to spend a Friday night in High Point? Tell me about those places I'm missing. Ooh, and while I'm asking, if anybody could recommend a good barber that'd be nice too.

What to do in High Point???
Well, now that the cruisers have gravitated up to Elm Street in Greensboro, which is a pretty good place to spend Friday night, our choices in High Point have become pretty limited.
While I agree there's not much to find in the tarmac tundra that is the Palladium area, I have become fixated on the trivia games they run at the new Buffalos. They give you a little game console, and you answer questions that pop up on the TV in competition with other people in the restaurant and in dozens of other eateries around the country.
I also like to see a movie and then head downtown to Noble's or the Adams Inn. Both are a little pricey, which is why I pop in after dinner and a movie for an excellent dessert and drinks. There's often a little jazz combo at Noble's.
If I'm looking for a little more action than that, there's always the Boom-Boom Room down toward Thomasville.
As for a barber, High Point's best old-school hair cutters are at the College Village Barber Shop off Lexington. It's literally hidden away in kind of an alcove, so you have to get out of your car to find the barber pole. The average age of the barbering crew is about 80, but they're skilled with the scissors and the straight razors (and their aren't too many shops like that any more).

Now FNF, that's some advice I can use! They really use straight-razors?
I haven't been able to find a place that does that in a long time, but man do I love an old-fashioned shave.
I agree with you about the trivia. There's a dive bar near my parents' house that has that same NTN Trivia game. When I was in my late teens, my buddies and I would go there a couple nights a week just to play. Well, that, and have a few beers. Good times.
